8 months ago | Artificial Intelligence

Jakarta, INTI – Inequality in technology access and the urgent need for digital talent development have driven the birth of a new initiative in Southeast Asia. Addressing these challenges, China officially launched the China-ASEAN Artificial Intelligence (AI) Application Cooperation Center on Thursday, September,19, 2025 during a ministerial roundtable on AI in Nanning, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, southern China. The initiative is expected to serve as a solution to accelerate cross-border collaboration in AI utilization while paving the way for more equitable access to technology, which has long been a key concern.

Focus of the AI Cooperation Center

China’s National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) stated that the center will play a pivotal role in building more inclusive AI infrastructure. In addition, it will provide an open-source platform to support innovation and establish AI talent development programs to enhance skills in artificial intelligence across ASEAN.

The "AI Plus" Initiative for ASEAN

At the same event, the “AI Plus” Initiative was also launched as a strategic step to broaden collaboration between China and ASEAN. Through this initiative, both parties aim to develop a ministerial-level cooperation mechanism focused on the practical application of AI across multiple sectors, including public services, industry, and education.

Long-Term Goals

The high-level meeting was also intended to create a sustainable dialogue platform between China and ASEAN countries. With the establishment of this official forum, AI development and governance are expected to be carried out collectively, ensuring that the benefits of technological advancement are shared equitably across the region.

Conclusion

The launch of the China-ASEAN AI Cooperation Center is not merely a symbolic step but a concrete demonstration of both parties’ commitment to strengthening the regional digital ecosystem. With well-directed infrastructure, talent, and cooperation mechanisms, AI is expected to become a key driver of economic growth and sustainable development in Southeast Asia.
