Jakarta INTI – Amid the accelerating wave of global technological innovation, the partnership between two world powers China and the United States (US) in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) has once again taken center stage. During the Global Digital Economy Conference (GDEC) 2025 held in Beijing from July 2–5, industry leaders and experts from both countries emphasized the importance of shifting from rivalry to collaboration in order to achieve mutual progress and prevent future global threats.
Experts stressed that a strong China US alliance in AI development would not only benefit both nations but also create a major opportunity to establish global ethical standards and safety protocols ensuring AI is used to improve human life rather than becoming a threat.
AI Is No Longer an Option It's a Shared Necessity
Stephen Orlins, President of the National Committee on US China Relations, said in his speech that the world currently stands at a “historical crossroads.” According to him, one path leads to division worsening geopolitical tensions and deepening digital fragmentation while the other leads to collaboration centered on transparency, resilience, and shared human values.
“This is not just a choice it is a necessity. China and the US can co-lead a global consortium to develop safety protocols for advanced AI systems,” said Orlins.
Facts: The US and China Dominate Global AI Research
According to an AI research report released during GDEC 2025, China and the US together account for nearly 60% of the world’s AI researchers as of the end of 2024. Both countries are major drivers behind AI development across various sectors, including healthcare, disaster prediction, and climate modeling.
Global consulting firm Gartner also reported that China has made significant strides in AI research and implementation, thanks to its strengths in design, engineering, and a dynamic digital ecosystem. It is projected that by 2030, more than half of China’s population will routinely use AI technology in their daily lives.
Complementary Strengths: China’s Data, America’s Algorithms
Xu Lin, Chairman of the China and US Green Fund, stated that AI collaboration between the two nations could be highly complementary. China’s massive data resources, when combined with the US’s advanced computing power and sophisticated algorithms, could drive major advancements in fields like pharmaceuticals, healthcare, and predictive technologies.
“This combination will accelerate the cycle from research to product deployment, and even facilitate the establishment of global AI governance frameworks,” Xu explained.
The Importance of Trust and Building Bridges in AI
Christopher Millward, President of the US Information Technology Office, stressed that trust is the foundation of sustainable and mutually beneficial technological cooperation. In this context, international collaboration is not only about innovation, but also about a shared commitment to building a better future.
Continuing that spirit, Orlins closed with a powerful message:
“History will remember whether we chose to build walls or bridges in the age of AI. Let’s choose to build bridges toward a future where AI benefits all of humanity.”
Conclusion:
AI collaboration between China and the United States is not just about technological advancement it’s about guiding AI toward a future that is safe, ethical, and universally beneficial. This partnership represents a tremendous opportunity to build a globally connected, human-centered future driven by responsible technology.
