ChatGPT Adds Record Mode Feature, Helps Users Automatically Transcribe Audio on macOS Desktop

10 months ago | Artificial Intelligence

Jakarta, INTI – Artificial intelligence technology is becoming more integrated into users’ daily lives. In its latest update, ChatGPT introduces a new feature called Record Mode, allowing users to record and convert audio into text automatically directly from the desktop app, specifically for paid users on macOS.

Record and Transcribe Directly in the App

The Record Mode feature was first announced in early June 2025 and is now available for ChatGPT subscribers on the Plus, Pro, Team, Enterprise, and Edu plans using macOS devices. With this feature, users can record conversations through a microphone or capture audio directly from their device. The recording is then automatically transcribed into text.

This feature is especially useful for activities like meetings, brainstorming sessions, or personal voice notes. However, each recording is limited to a maximum of 120 minutes per session. Once the time limit is reached, the recording automatically stops and the transcription process begins immediately.

Summarize and Timestamp Automatically

Beyond transcription, ChatGPT can also analyze the audio content and generate summaries complete with timestamps. These timestamps help users quickly locate specific parts of a conversation or audio file without listening from the beginning.

The transcription results are displayed on a dedicated page called the canvas, where users can view and manage all generated text, code, or notes from their ChatGPT sessions.

Privacy Maintained: Audio Not Stored Permanently

OpenAI emphasizes that the Record Mode feature maintains user privacy. Audio files are not stored permanently, and they are deleted once the transcription process is complete. Moreover, these recordings are not used to train AI models, unless users explicitly enable the “improve the model for everyone” option.

For Team, Enterprise, and Edu users, their data will never be used for training purposes. Meanwhile, Plus and Pro users have the option to contribute their transcripts to improve ChatGPT performance only if they give their consent.

Not Yet Available on Windows and Android

As of now, Record Mode is only available for macOS desktop users with paid subscriptions. Free users and those using Windows or Android will need to wait, as the feature is not yet accessible on those platforms.

With Record Mode, ChatGPT goes beyond being a text-based chatbot. It now acts as a smart assistant that can listen and understand voice interactions, helping users take notes, summarize, and navigate important information efficiently.

Conclusion:
The Record Mode feature in ChatGPT offers a practical solution for users who need safe and automatic audio transcription. With built-in analysis and timestamped summaries, it’s ideal for both professional and personal use. Although currently limited to paid macOS users, this feature marks a clear step toward a more intuitive and useful AI experience.
