Jakarta, INTI – Chinese tech giant Baidu has taken a major step in the field of artificial intelligence by open-sourcing its flagship AI model, Ernie. This announcement comes amid intense competition in China’s AI industry, with rivals like Bytedance and DeepSeek currently boasting significantly larger user bases than Baidu.
Previously, access to Ernie required a monthly subscription to the Ernie Bot service. However, starting June 30, 2025, Baidu officially released the source code and training parameters of the model to the public. The goal is to broaden AI adoption across the country by reducing the cost barriers, especially for local developers.
Driving Innovation Through Open Access
By offering Ernie 4.5 for free, Baidu aims to enhance its competitiveness in the domestic AI market. Currently, Ernie Bot has around 23 million users far fewer than Doubao by Bytedance, which has surpassed 87 million users. The newly released model is said to feature multimodal capabilities, enabling it to process text, images, audio, and video, while also understanding complex contexts such as memes and satire.
Baidu claims that Ernie 4.5 outperforms OpenAI’s GPT-4.5 in internal testing, with operational costs at only about one percent of the latter. Additional advantages include advanced programming logic, improved reasoning, and better hallucination prevention mechanisms.
Ernie X1: Focused on Deep Reasoning
In addition to Ernie 4.5, Baidu introduced Ernie X1, a model specifically designed for high-level logical tasks such as document analysis, content creation, and solving complex mathematical problems. The model is trained using progressive reinforcement learning with multi-factor reward systems, and it provides visible “thinking trails” similar to DeepSeek-R1 yet at half the cost.
Ernie X1 supports image comprehension, concept mapping, and is built to serve sectors requiring high reliability in information processing, such as law, research, and tech development.
Toward an Open AI Ecosystem
The release of Ernie as open source marks a key milestone in China’s AI development strategy. In a landscape that’s becoming increasingly expensive and competitive, Baidu is pursuing a collaborative approach expanding access to its technology across different levels of users and developers, while building a more inclusive digital ecosystem.
Though Baidu was one of the first Chinese companies to develop a local ChatGPT competitor, it has faced challenges in scaling up its user base. Competitors like DeepSeek have already been widely adopted by major smartphone manufacturers such as Xiaomi, Infinix, and Realme.
Conclusion: Competing Through Collaboration and Efficiency
Baidu’s decision to open access to Ernie AI is not just a business tactic it’s a statement of vision. By offering powerful AI tools that are affordable and accessible, Baidu positions itself as a leader not just in terms of technology, but in fostering collaboration and cost-effective innovation.
This move also reflects a broader question facing the global AI landscape: Will the winners be defined by technological superiority, or by cash flow and smart distribution strategies?
