Jakarta, INTI – China's tech giant, Baidu, officially launched two new artificial intelligence (AI) models, ERNIE X1 and ERNIE 4.5, on Sunday on March 16, 2025. These models were introduced as the primary competitors to DeepSeek, an AI that previously shook the tech industry with its high efficiency and lower costs compared to other models.
Advantages of ERNIE X1 and ERNIE 4.5
According to an AFP report, ERNIE X1 is designed as a deep reasoning model with multimodal capabilities, allowing it to understand and analyze various types of data, including text, images, and audio. Baidu claims that ERNIE X1 performs on par with DeepSeek R1 but at only half the cost.
Meanwhile, ERNIE 4.5 is Baidu's latest foundational model. It offers more advanced language comprehension capabilities, along with improvements in logic, understanding, and memory. One of the standout features of ERNIE 4.5 is its ability to interpret satire and memes, making it more adaptive to evolving internet language and communication.
Intensifying Competition in the AI Industry
Baidu was one of the first companies in China to publicly release a generative AI platform in 2023. However, it has faced significant challenges in gaining widespread adoption, especially after DeepSeek introduced the open-source R1 model, which provided higher cost efficiency.
Baidu’s launch of ERNIE X1 and 4.5 is a strategic move to remain competitive in the rapidly growing global AI industry. Additionally, Baidu has announced plans to make the ERNIE AI model open-source starting June 30, 2025, following DeepSeek’s earlier move.
Baidu CEO’s Response and the Future of AI
Baidu’s CEO, Robin Li, responded to the rapid growth of AI by stating that many AI startups today exist within a ‘bubble’ that is vulnerable to bursting. He compared this trend to the dot-com bubble of the 1990s, where only a few companies survived and delivered long-term value.
Li also predicted that in the next 10 to 30 years, AI technology will replace many human jobs across various sectors. This aligns with a Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) survey, which revealed that 21% of AI projects failed to execute successfully in 2023, highlighting that not all AI innovations can sustain long-term viability.
Conclusion
The launch of ERNIE X1 and ERNIE 4.5 demonstrates Baidu’s commitment to developing more competitive and efficient AI technology. With a more affordable pricing strategy and advanced multimodal capabilities, Baidu aims to challenge DeepSeek’s dominance in the Chinese and global AI markets. However, with increasing competition and the rapid evolution of AI technology, only time will tell whether this move will give Baidu a lasting advantage.
