Amid Rising Global Pressure, Parliament Urges Industry Shift Toward Green Practices

2 months ago | Green Industrial

Jakarta, INTI - Novita Hardini, a member of Commission VII of the House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia, emphasized the importance of implementing green industry transformation as a key strategy to withstand ongoing global economic pressures and crises.

She noted that growing global uncertainty has increasingly burdened national industries, with impacts extending beyond large corporations to households and farmers.

Global Economic Pressures Threaten Industrial Sustainability

The weakening rupiah, rising energy prices, and escalating geopolitical tensions are seen as a combination of serious threats to the sustainability of domestic industries.

“Today’s economic pressures are being directly felt by both the public and industry players. Rising energy prices have a direct impact on production costs,” Novita said in a press statement on Sunday, February 1, 2026.

“Without serious and sustained transformation, national industries risk stagnation and could even be eroded by the global crisis,” she added.

Green Industry Transformation Beyond Symbolic Actions

One of the examples highlighted was the initiative by PT Japfa Comfeed Indonesia in Lampung Province, which has started utilizing solar energy as a renewable power source. The move was acknowledged as a positive initial step toward sustainability.

However, she emphasized that green industry should not stop at symbolic measures or merely switching electricity sources.

“Green industry is not just about solar panels. Transformation must also address waste management, ecosystem protection, resource efficiency, and deliver real impact on the surrounding environment. Otherwise, the concept of green becomes nothing more than a slogan,” she stressed.

She also encouraged the company to become a pilot project for green industry in the food sector by fully applying sustainability principles across the entire value chain, from upstream to downstream.

Beyond environmental aspects, Novita highlighted the importance of economic inclusivity within the food industry ecosystem. She warned against large corporations operating in isolation without involving smaller enterprises.

“In line with the President’s Asta Cita vision on food independence and sovereignty, large industries must not operate alone. There must be real collaboration opportunities for MSMEs and micro businesses, so that the benefits of industrial progress can reach the lowest levels of the economy,” she said.

According to her, the success of green industry transformation should not only be measured by energy efficiency or production output, but also by how well industries can remain resilient amid global crises, protect the environment, and promote economic equity.

“If we are not willing to change now, national industries will not only lose competitiveness but could be overwhelmed by the global crisis,” she concluded.

Conclusion

The call for green industry transformation reflects the urgency for Indonesia to adapt to increasing global economic pressures. As highlighted by House of Representatives of the Republic of Indonesia, sustainability is no longer optional but essential for maintaining competitiveness and resilience. A comprehensive approach, covering environmental responsibility, economic inclusivity, and long-term strategy, will be key to ensuring that national industries can survive and thrive amid global uncertainty.
