AI3 Supports Jakarta in Implementing Artificial Intelligence for a Smarter and More Efficient City

8 months ago | Smart City

Jakarta, INTI – The Jakarta Provincial Government is accelerating its digital transformation efforts by leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to build a modern, efficient, and inclusive city. This commitment was reaffirmed by Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung during a recent Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on the development of an AI implementation roadmap for the capital.

From Data to Welfare: Jakarta’s AI Vision

Pramono explained that AI is not just a trendy technology, but a strategic tool to improve public welfare. “The core principle is simple: Data → Patterns → Machines → Public Welfare,” he said. He emphasized that Jakarta must be ready to adopt AI not just quickly, but also strategically, to make it a driving force for inclusive urban development.

Transportation as the Starting Point for AI Implementation

One of the main focus areas discussed was the application of AI in Jakarta’s transportation system. Currently, the city operates 65 Intelligent Traffic Control System (ITCS) points—far below the ideal 320. Pramono highlighted that this system is crucial for transforming Jakarta’s transportation landscape, which has long struggled with chronic congestion.

“With expanded and AI-powered ITCS, we are optimistic that Jakarta can be removed from the list of the world’s most congested cities,” he said.

AI to Improve Government Efficiency

Sony Subrata, founder of AI3 a nonprofit think tank that advocates AI adoption in public institutions voiced his strong support for Governor Pramono’s initiative. He stated that applying AI in Jakarta will not only speed up public services but also drive structural efficiency and foster new ideas for increasing local revenue.

“We believe AI can significantly boost the productivity of civil servants and act as a catalyst for data-driven public sector reform,” Sony explained.

Long-Term Strategy: Infrastructure, Human Resources, and Integrated Data

Jakarta’s AI implementation strategy is anchored on four pillars: data, technology, people, and policy. Several steps have been outlined, including expanding ITCS infrastructure, training skilled human resources in AI applications, and integrating cross-sectoral data to support more analytical, evidence-based policymaking.

Encouraging Public Participation in Digital Transformation

The transformation toward an AI-driven city also calls for community involvement. The government plans to organize workshops and seminars to educate the public on the role of AI and how it can enhance everyday life. Public awareness and participation are key to ensuring that all citizens benefit from technological advancements.

Jakarta Aims to Lead AI Development in Southeast Asia

With a clear vision and strong support from key stakeholders, Jakarta aspires to become a leading AI-powered city in Southeast Asia. The integration of AI into governance will help create policies that are more responsive and adaptable to the evolving needs of its citizens.

“This initiative is a gateway to a new era of artificial intelligence in Indonesia,” Sony Subrata concluded.
