Wikipedia is ready to use AI, but still relies on editors and volunteers as the main pillars

11 months ago | Artificial Intelligence

Jakarta, – INTI In its latest move, the Wikimedia Foundation, the non-profit organization behind the free online encyclopedia Wikipedia, announced that it will utilize artificial intelligence (AI) to support information management. However, it is important to note: AI will not replace the primary role of editors and volunteer writers on the platform.

Through its official statement on Wednesday, April 30, reported by TechCrunch, the Wikimedia Foundation explained that AI technology will function as a tool that facilitates the work of the community, not as a substitute for humans. These AI-based features are designed to remove technical barriers and strengthen the capacity of editors, moderators, and content monitors to work more efficiently.

Amid global concerns that AI could displace humans, especially in content creation, Wikimedia emphasized that its approach remains focused on human collaboration as the core of co-constructed knowledge.

Some examples of planned AI applications include automation of certain workflows, improved accessibility of content across languages, as well as assistance in the article translation process and onboarding of new volunteer authors.

Chris Albon, Director of Machine Learning, and Leila Zia, Head of Research at the Wikimedia Foundation, emphasized that all of these initiatives remain rooted in Wikimedia's fundamental principles: maintaining privacy, respecting human rights, and upholding openness.

“Our success in leveraging AI is not only determined by what we build, but also how we build it,” they wrote in the organization's official blog.

Wikimedia's approach to AI will promote the principles of human-centered design, transparency, and the use of open-source technology. They will also consider the multilingual context as a fundamental element of Wikipedia.

In an era where generative AI is increasingly widely used but still has the risk of misinforming the mission of maintaining the integrity of Wikipedia's collective knowledge is more important than ever.

Conclusion

The Wikimedia Foundation's move to adopt artificial intelligence reflects a collaborative and ethical approach to digital transformation. Rather than replacing humans, AI will be used to strengthen the community of editors and volunteers that is the foundation of Wikipedia. By upholding the principles of openness, privacy, and language diversity, this initiative is an example of how technology can be used to support, rather than take over, the human role in building shared knowledge.
