Wikimedia Faces Potential Block in Indonesia, Here’s the Outcome of Talks with Komdigi

10 hours ago | Digital Technology

Jakarta, INTI - The Wikimedia Foundation announced that it held a meeting with Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) last week, following concerns that its platforms could be blocked for not yet registering as a Private Electronic System Operator (PSE).

In a statement shared via its official X account @wikimediapolicy on April 25, Wikimedia described the discussion as constructive. During the meeting, the organization explained its unique operational model, which relies on a global volunteer community supported by local affiliates such as Wikimedia Indonesia. It also reaffirmed its commitment to upholding human rights.

Wikimedia further expressed its willingness to cooperate with the Indonesian government regarding its operations in the country and stated that it would continue working with Komdigi on the next steps.

Regulatory Pressure Over PSE Compliance

The Indonesian government had previously given Wikimedia a seven-working-day deadline starting April 15, 2026, to complete its PSE registration process, with the deadline falling on April 24. As of now, Wikipedia remains accessible in Indonesia.

Earlier, access to Wikimedia Commons was restored on March 26, 2026, and Wikipedia has been operating normally. However, the login feature under the domain auth.wikimedia.org is still blocked, based on recent observations.

Risk of Nationwide Access Block

Komdigi had warned that failure to comply with the registration requirement within the given timeframe could result in a full block of Wikimedia Foundation services in Indonesia. This would affect the entire Wikimedia ecosystem, including platforms such as Wikipedia, Wikimedia Commons, Wikidata, and others.

According to Alexander Sabar, Director General of Digital Space Supervision at Komdigi, the ultimatum was issued after the government had already granted an extension since 2025 at Wikimedia’s request. The formal notification for PSE registration had been sent as early as November 14, 2025.

If a full block were to be implemented, Indonesian users would lose access to a wide range of Wikimedia services, including encyclopedic content, educational resources, multimedia archives, and collaborative knowledge platforms.

As of now, Komdigi has not yet responded to further inquiries regarding the outcome of the meeting or the current status of Wikimedia’s PSE registration.

Conclusion

The situation highlights the growing importance of regulatory compliance in Indonesia’s digital landscape, particularly for global platforms operating locally. While discussions between the Wikimedia Foundation and Ministry of Communication and Digital remain ongoing, the outcome will likely set a precedent for how international digital services align with national regulations moving forward.
