Unpad Lecturer Encourages Students to Use AI as a Learning Companion in the Digital Era

9 hours ago | Artificial Intelligence

Jakarta, INTI – September 29, 2025 Amid the growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in education, a new challenge has emerged: how to use this technology wisely. Many students tend to rely on raw outputs from AI without engaging in deeper thinking, which can potentially diminish their analytical skills. Observing this phenomenon, Google, together with several academics, hosted a talk titled “Google AI Supports Quality and Safe Education” in South Jakarta. In the event, Universitas Padjadjaran (Unpad) lecturer and content creator, Ira Mirawati, offered a solution by encouraging students to see AI not as a replacement for the brain, but as a learning companion that fosters creative and critical thinking.

AI as a Discussion Partner

Ira emphasized that students should use AI as if they are having a dialogue with a discussion partner. This way, interactions go beyond merely copying answers, encouraging the development of creative thinking from crafting prompts to analyzing the results. “AI helps them think. Even creating prompts on their own is already a creative process,” she explained.

Understanding is Key, Not Just Copying

According to Ira, using AI in the learning process is allowed, but students must genuinely understand the information they obtain. “AI can be used, but don’t just copy-paste. The results must still be elaborated with the student’s own thinking,” she stressed. By doing so, students are expected to process the information effectively, enhancing both their knowledge and critical thinking skills.

Preventing Misuse of AI

To prevent students from copying AI-generated answers, the university has implemented precautionary measures. Ira mentioned that Unpad has equipped tools to detect AI use, while also relying on lecturers’ experience to identify assignments entirely produced by machines. With this oversight, students are encouraged to be more cautious and responsible when using AI.

Official AI Regulations at Universitas Padjadjaran

Furthermore, Ira explained that Unpad has official regulations governing AI usage, as outlined in Rector Regulation Number 8 of 2025. The regulation allows students to use AI for inspiration, outlining assignments, or improving grammar. However, AI cannot be used to complete assignments entirely. “There are points where AI is allowed, but even if editing with AI is permitted, it shouldn’t be done completely,” she added.

Conclusion

Through this talk, an important message was delivered: AI is a supportive tool, not a substitute for human thinking. By treating AI as a learning companion, students can develop critical and creative thinking skills while using technology responsibly and wisely.
