Tunisia Enters the New Digital Era: Launches 5G Network for Households

1 year ago | Network Infrastructure

Jakarta, INTI – Tunisia has officially stepped into the fifth generation of wireless technology with the launch of its first 5G network for residential users. This strategic initiative was led by national operator Tunisie Telecom in collaboration with global technology giant Ericsson, making Tunisia the first country in North Africa to commercially roll out 5G services.

Official Launch with National Significance

The launch ceremony took place on Saturday (March 29) at the Palais du Gouvernement La Kasbah in Tunisia. The event was attended by the Head of Government and the Minister of Communication Technologies, underlining strong governmental support for the country’s digital transformation agenda.

Tunisie Telecom confirmed that the 5G network launched is based on non-stand-alone (NSA) architecture, featuring enhanced Mobile Broadband (eMBB) and Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) technologies. These enable high-speed wireless internet access for households without the need for traditional cable connections.

Advanced Infrastructure with Ultra-Fast Speeds

From a technical standpoint, Tunisia’s 5G network utilizes TDD (Time Division Duplex) sites operating on the 3.5 GHz frequency band, along with FDD (Frequency Division Duplex) reusing existing 4G spectrum in the 2100 MHz and 1800 MHz bands. This setup delivers ultra-fast download speeds of up to 2.1 Gbit/s, offering users a faster and more responsive digital experience.

The deployment of the 3.5 GHz band marks its first-ever use in Tunisia, providing wider bandwidth and stronger performance. Meanwhile, FDD integration ensures broader geographic coverage and seamless compatibility with existing mobile infrastructure.

Supporting Tunisia’s Digital Strategy 2025

The rollout is a key component of Tunisia’s Digital Strategy 2025, which aims to position digital technologies at the core of national economic and social development.

According to Tahar Labidi, Senior Account Manager at Ericsson, the project was completed within a tight schedule and complex architecture—yet it was delivered successfully and efficiently.

“Despite the very tight timeline and relatively complex network architecture, we managed to combine our efforts and complete this launch on time and with great success,” he said.

Strategic Milestone for Tunisie Telecom

Oussama Samet, Director of the Tunisie Telecom Network Center, expressed pride in the company’s achievement. He emphasized that the successful rollout reflects strong collaboration with Ericsson and readiness for the next phase of 5G development.

“This commercial launch marks a significant achievement for Tunisie Telecom. With Ericsson as our strategic partner, we are well-positioned to move forward with the next phase, including the development of use cases and monetization strategies,” he stated.

Conclusion: Building Tunisia’s Digital Future

The launch of 5G by Tunisie Telecom represents a major leap in Tunisia’s digital evolution. With faster and more reliable connectivity for households, the service paves the way for innovation across various sectors—including education, healthcare, industry, and public services.

This milestone solidifies Tunisia’s role as a digital leader in North Africa and highlights the power of public-private collaboration in driving national progress toward a more connected, intelligent, and inclusive future.
