Jakarta, INTI - Canada will allow TikTok to continue operating in the country. Contrary to the country’s previous orders for the social platform company to close its operations in Canada due to security reasons.
In November 2024, Canada ordered ByteDance to close its Canadian division and offices in Toronto and Vancouver, but it would not ban TikTok app use in the country. This was when the Canadian government was under former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's administration.
However, in January 2026, that order was frozen following a legal motion from the government. The decision came just days after Mark Carney, the current Prime Minister of Canada, visited China. He became the first Canadian prime minister in more than eight years to visit China, where he announced a deal with President Xi Jinping to relax tariffs.
TikTok’s Canadian Subsidiary Will Operate Under New Conditions
In a statement on Monday, March 9, 2026, Canadian Minister of Industry Melanie Joly said that TikTok Technology Canada Inc. will now be allowed to operate on the condition of new legally binding commitments to improve its security.
“TikTok will add security gateways and privacy-enhancing technologies to control access to Canadian user data to reduce the risk of unauthorised or prohibited access,” Joly said.
The company is required to increase protection for users who are minors. The government will also appoint an independent third-party monitor to audit and verify data access controls.
TikTok will also increase support to Canadian content creators and cultural organisations, according to a statement from the company.
Conclusion
TikTok will continue its operations in Canada after the current Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney, visited China. TikTok was ordered to close its offices in Toronto and Vancouver due to security concerns. Under new conditions and policies, TikTok will improve its security by adding security gateways and increasing protection for minor users.
