The Development of the Payment Gateway Industry in Indonesia: Opportunities and Challenges

10 months ago | Digital Transformation

Jakarta, INTI – In the rapidly evolving digital era, digital payment systems have become an essential part of everyday life. One of the key innovations driving the digital payment ecosystem is the payment gateway. During the Inti Talk session on February 28, 2025, Madam Angelika Putri, Founder and Secretary-General of APGI (Indonesian Payment Gateway Association), shared insights on the development, potential, and challenges of payment gateways in Indonesia.

The Rapid Growth of the Payment Gateway Industry

The payment gateway industry in Indonesia has experienced significant growth over the past decade. From just three to five licensed companies, the number has now expanded to more than 30. The shift in consumer behavior from cash payments to digital transactions has fueled this growth, attracting more companies to enter the payment gateway industry.

Payment gateways are no longer limited to serving e-commerce and marketplaces; they have also expanded to small merchants, MSMEs, and the informal sector, such as street vendors and parking attendants, who now accept digital payments via QRIS. Moreover, new technologies like soundbox devices that provide audio confirmation of payments have also been adopted, demonstrating the deep integration of payment gateways into various aspects of daily life.

The Enormous Potential of Payment Gateways in Indonesia

Given the increasing trend of digital transactions, Indonesia's payment gateway industry holds immense potential. It is not only transforming online transactions but also enhancing offline payment systems through digital devices like MPOS (Mobile Point of Sale). With the rising volume of digital transactions, the industry continues to innovate to ensure faster, safer, and more efficient payment solutions.

The Impact of Payment Gateways on Digital Transformation

As a crucial part of Indonesia’s digital transformation, payment gateways play a vital role in ensuring secure and efficient transactions. Industry associations have also established security standards to protect both users and businesses utilizing digital payment services. With stricter regulations, the digital transaction ecosystem is expected to become more reliable and stable.

Business and Investment Opportunities in the Payment Gateway Industry

The rapid growth of payment gateways has also attracted investors' attention. This industry is considered highly attractive for both local and foreign investments due to its continuous expansion. While some Indonesian payment gateway companies remain 100% locally owned, others are opening opportunities for foreign investors to collaborate.

With the increasing adoption of digital transactions and supportive government regulations, payment gateways not only accelerate digital transformation but also create new business opportunities. Entrepreneurs, investors, and the general public can leverage this industry to develop more innovative and inclusive payment solutions.

Conclusion

The payment gateway industry in Indonesia is growing rapidly and significantly contributing to economic digitalization. With vast investment opportunities and the adoption of new technologies, payment gateways will continue to be a promising sector in the future. The increasing inclusivity of digital payments will drive economic growth and establish a more modern and efficient transaction ecosystem.
