Jakarta, INTI - PT Telkom Satelit Indonesia (Telkomsat), the satellite operator of Telkom Group, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with UNIVITY to explore strategic collaboration opportunities in developing satellite-based connectivity solutions that support Indonesia’s growing telecommunications needs.
The partnership reflects both companies’ commitment to assessing the potential of advanced satellite connectivity technologies, including Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO) architecture, Direct-to-Device services, and sovereign satellite connectivity capabilities designed to strengthen Indonesia’s digital infrastructure.
Advancing Hybrid Multi-Orbit Architecture
As part of the collaboration, Telkomsat and UNIVITY will examine the integration of Indonesia-based ground station infrastructure with UNIVITY’s future VLEO satellite constellation. The two companies will also evaluate the development of a hybrid multi-orbit architecture by combining Telkomsat’s geostationary satellite network with UNIVITY’s VLEO system.
The proposed integration aims to deliver secure, resilient, and adaptive connectivity solutions tailored to Indonesia’s national requirements. These solutions are also expected to support public sector priorities, including applications related to national security.
Anggoro K. Widiawan, Director of Development at Telkomsat, stated, “Satellite connectivity continues to play a vital role in supporting Indonesia’s digital ecosystem, particularly in remote and geographically dispersed regions. Through this MoU with UNIVITY, we look forward to exploring how next-generation satellite architectures and non-terrestrial network capabilities can address the country’s evolving connectivity demands.”
As Indonesia’s national satellite operator, Telkomsat combines satellite and terrestrial communication services through its satellite assets, ground station infrastructure, operational expertise, and comprehensive understanding of the country’s regulatory landscape.
Supporting the Future of Satellite Connectivity
Charles Delfieux, Founder and CEO of UNIVITY, said, “Indonesia is one of the world’s most dynamic connectivity markets, offering significant opportunities for the convergence of terrestrial and space-based networks. Through this partnership with Telkomsat, we aim to explore how next-generation satellite connectivity solutions can complement existing infrastructure and enable new applications in the years ahead.”
UNIVITY is developing a Very Low Earth Orbit (VLEO) satellite constellation that leverages mobile operators’ 5G spectrum to provide high-speed, low-latency connectivity. The VLEO network is designed to complement existing terrestrial infrastructure rather than replace it.
By combining their expertise, Telkomsat and UNIVITY aim to accelerate the development of hybrid multi-orbit connectivity while paving the way for broader adoption of next-generation satellite technologies across Indonesia.
Conclusion
The Telkomsat–UNIVITY partnership marks an important step toward exploring next-generation satellite connectivity, combining hybrid multi-orbit capabilities and VLEO technology to strengthen Indonesia's digital infrastructure and expand reliable connectivity nationwide.
