Strengthening Economic Growth: Indonesia and Hong Kong Deepen Strategic Investment Collaboration

1 year ago | News

Jakarta, INTI - The Indonesian government continues to emphasize the importance of international cooperation in bolstering economic growth and enhancing the nation’s global competitiveness. Through bilateral meetings with strategic partners, Indonesia actively explores investment opportunities across key sectors, including infrastructure, supply chain management, and renewable energy.

In a significant move to foster such collaborations, the Financial Secretary of Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), Paul Chan, met with Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, on Wednesday (January 8) at the Coordinating Ministry’s office in Jakarta. The meeting underscored the potential for Hong Kong to serve as a strategic partner in developing Indonesia’s supply chain services, leveraging its status as one of Asia's largest financial hubs.

Exploring Strategic Opportunities in Supply Chain and Finance

During the meeting, Secretary Paul Chan expressed Hong Kong's interest in expanding its role as a partner for Indonesia, particularly in enhancing supply chain services and advancing financial cooperation. Hong Kong sees tremendous potential for collaboration with Indonesia in these areas, especially given Indonesia's robust economic growth and promising market conditions.

"Indonesia offers a stable and conducive business environment, supported by its young and dynamic population. This demographic advantage makes it an attractive destination for investment and collaboration," Paul Chan remarked.

Minister Airlangga welcomed Hong Kong’s intentions, emphasizing Indonesia's commitment to facilitating foreign investment through a range of fiscal incentives. “We provide various fiscal incentives, including Tax Holiday, Tax Allowance, Investment Allowance, and Super Deduction Tax. These measures make it easier for businesses from Indonesia and Hong Kong to access broader markets and enhance operational efficiency,” Airlangga explained.

Navigating Global Economic Uncertainties

Beyond investment prospects, the two leaders discussed the challenges posed by the current global economic climate. Geopolitical tensions and inflationary pressures have created significant uncertainties worldwide. However, Secretary Chan praised Indonesia’s economic resilience, highlighting its steady growth amidst these challenges.

According to data from the World Bank, Indonesia recorded a 5.17% GDP growth in the third quarter of 2024, surpassing the average growth of other emerging economies. This resilience has positioned Indonesia as a key player in regional and global markets, attracting investors seeking stability and long-term returns.

“Despite the global difficulties, Indonesia’s economic fundamentals remain strong. This gives Hong Kong businesses confidence to expand their presence in Indonesia,” Secretary Chan added.

Focus on Renewable Energy and Special Economic Zones

The discussion also touched on other high-potential sectors for collaboration, particularly renewable energy and greenfield projects. Indonesia’s ambitious goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060 presents significant opportunities for investors in the renewable energy sector.

Minister Airlangga pointed out that Indonesia has designated Special Economic Zones (SEZs) as hubs for investment, offering targeted incentives and infrastructure support. SEZs focus on industries such as manufacturing, tourism, digital economy, and industrial zones, creating a fertile ground for innovative partnerships.

“The renewable energy sector and SEZ development are prime examples of areas where Hong Kong investors can make meaningful contributions while reaping substantial benefits. These projects are aligned with Indonesia’s long-term economic goals and sustainability commitments,” Airlangga stated.

Building Stronger Bilateral Ties

The bilateral meeting was attended by prominent figures from both sides, reflecting the high-level commitment to strengthening economic ties. Among those present were Deputy for Economic and Investment Cooperation of the Coordinating Ministry for Economic Affairs, Edi Prio Pambudi, Special Staff to the Coordinating Minister, Raden Pardede, Indonesian Consul General in Hong Kong, Yul Edison, and the Chairperson of the Indonesian Employers Association (APINDO), Shinta Widjaja Kamdani.

This diverse representation underscores the collaborative approach adopted by both governments, combining public and private sector efforts to create a more robust investment ecosystem.

Why This Partnership Matters

The collaboration between Indonesia and Hong Kong has far-reaching implications. For Indonesia, the partnership represents an opportunity to accelerate its economic transformation and attract high-quality investments that drive innovation and job creation. For Hong Kong, Indonesia offers access to a vast market and an expanding middle class, providing fertile ground for business growth.

Real-time data from IMF projections suggests that Indonesia is on track to become one of the world’s top five economies by 2045. This potential, coupled with its demographic advantages, positions Indonesia as a key player in the global economy.

Paul Chan emphasized the mutual benefits of this partnership, noting that Hong Kong’s advanced financial services could complement Indonesia’s efforts to modernize its infrastructure and industries. “We believe that collaboration with Indonesia will not only strengthen economic ties but also contribute to the stability and growth of the broader Asia-Pacific region,” Chan said.

A Vision for Sustainable Growth

At the end of the meeting, both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to fostering a sustainable and inclusive economic partnership. They agreed that future collaborations would prioritize high-impact sectors such as green energy, digital transformation, and infrastructure development.

The Indonesian government’s proactive approach, combined with Hong Kong’s financial expertise, creates a win-win scenario for both parties. This partnership is expected to yield significant economic benefits while addressing critical global challenges such as climate change and supply chain disruptions.

Looking Ahead

The meeting between Minister Airlangga and Secretary Chan marks a pivotal step in enhancing bilateral ties between Indonesia and Hong Kong. By leveraging their respective strengths, the two economies can navigate global uncertainties and emerge stronger, more resilient, and better connected.

For Indonesia, the collaboration aligns with its vision of becoming a regional economic powerhouse. Meanwhile, Hong Kong’s role as a financial hub positions it as a strategic partner in Indonesia’s growth journey.

This partnership is more than just an exchange of investments—it is a testament to the power of international cooperation in driving sustainable and inclusive economic growth.
