Jakarta, INTI - Pertamina Foundation (PF) introduced an innovative artificial intelligence (AI)-based biodiversity monitoring system called PF-Lestari, amid the growing demand for transparency, reporting accuracy, and the implementation of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) principles
Supported by AI technology and spatial analysis, PF-Lestari can measure vegetation health indices, detect land cover changes, and estimate tree counts. The platform also features a precision mapping feature that allows users to observe land cover and topographic profiles more comprehensively.
With these various features, PF-Lestari facilitates digital inventory of plant species, maintenance history, and even maps the initial potential for carbon sequestration in planted areas.
"Through PF-Lestari, we integrate monitoring, analysis, and reporting processes to make them more efficient and accurate. Currently, PF-Lestari has been implemented in various areas of the Sustainable Forest (Hutan Lestari) program managed by PF to support the rehabilitation of critical land in Forest Area with Special Purposes (KHDTK)," said Agus Mashud S. Asngari, President Director of Pertamina Foundation.
Integrated System for Various Forestry Aspects
Agus added that the PF-Lestari innovation arose from the challenges of decentralized biodiversity data management, which made it difficult to obtain periodic visualizations of actual conditions.
With its technology, PF-Lestari supports data collection on the planting of endemic trees and multi-purpose tree species (MPTS), while strengthening forestry research and education functions. PF-Lestari also has an integrated dashboard that enables more efficient field data management, survival rate estimation, carbon stock potential estimation, as well as a more measurable and accountable program evaluation process.
"PF-Lestari has the potential to generate Rp2.19 billion in value creation, supported by internal replication, expansion within the Pertamina Group, and external commercialization," Agus said.
Through the use of PF-Lestari, the planning and reporting of environmental conservation initiatives are expected to strengthen. This documented data is in line with Asta Cita regarding strengthening environmental resilience, as well as supporting the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) points 13 (Climate Action), 14 (Life Below Water), and 15 (Life On Land).
Appreciation for PF-Lestari
PF-Lestari's innovation was recognized at the Annual Pertamina Quality Award (APQA) 2026, earning Platinum honors in the PC-Prove category. The APQ Awards recognize quality implementation, specifically the implementation of the 4 Pillars of Quality Management within PT Pertamina (Persero). The APQ Awards have been an annual event since 2010.
"This is the first time the Pertamina Foundation has participated in APQA and has immediately achieved Platinum honors. This achievement is proof that the innovation we have developed meets high-quality standards and is a significant motivation for us to continue innovating to support more accountable and sustainable environmental programs," said Agus.
Conclusion
Pertamina Foundation launched PF-Lestari, an artificial intelligence (AI)-based biodiversity monitoring system designed to improve transparency, reporting accuracy, and the implementation of ESG principles. The platform leverages AI and spatial analysis to measure vegetation health, detect land cover changes, calculate tree count estimates, and support digital plant inventories, maintenance monitoring, and carbon sequestration potential estimations. Pertamina Foundation said that this innovation has the potential to generate Rp2.19 billion in value creation through internal replication, expansion to the Pertamina Group, and external commercialization.
