Jakarta, INTI - OpenAI is reportedly developing its own smartphone, and this project is said to be progressing faster than expected.
Previously predicted to launch in 2028, the device now has the potential to enter mass production earlier in the first half of 2027.
This acceleration is said to be driven by the rapid growth of the artificial intelligence (AI)-based smartphone market, as well as the company's possible initial public offering (IPO) in the near future.
According to GSM Arena, analyst Ming-Chi Kuo stated that MediaTek will likely be the sole SoC supplier. The device is expected to use a customized Dimensity 9600 chipset, which will be built using TSMC's N2P process in the second half of this year.
OpenAI’s Smartphone will be AI-Based
The OpenAI smartphone is designed as an AI agent-based device. Leaked specifications include a dual-NPU architecture for advanced AI processing, LPDDR6 RAM and UFS 5.0 storage, a camera system with an improved HDR pipeline for better visual quality, and security features such as pKVM and inline hashing.
If development goes according to plan, Kuo estimates that total OpenAI smartphone shipments could reach 30 million units between 2027 and 2028.
Conclusion
OpenAI's smartphone project is reportedly expected to launch faster, from its initial target of 2028 to the first half of 2027. This may be driven by the growth of the AI phone market and potential IPO plans. This device will likely use a modified Dimensity 9600 chipset from MediaTek, based on the TSMC process, and is designed as an AI agent-based smartphone with high specifications. If all goes according to plan, device shipments are projected to reach 30 million units in the 2027–2028 period.
