OJK Reveals Rising Trend of AI-Based Financial Scams, Urging the Public to be More Careful

2 hours ago | Artificial Intelligence

Jakarta, INTI - The Financial Services Authority (OJK) has revealed that financial fraud cases utilizing artificial intelligence (AI) technology continue to show an upward trend. Data from the Indonesia Anti-Scam Center (IASC) records that between November 22, 2024, and the end of June 2026, there were 1,379 reports of fraud suspected of utilizing AI.

Dicky Kartikoyono, OJK’s Chief Executive of Market Conduct Supervision, Financial Education, and Consumer Protection, explained that of the total reports, 13 cases occurred at the end of 2024. The figure subsequently rose significantly throughout 2025 and the first half of 2026, totaling 1,366 reports. He revealed this data during the July RDKB Press Conference on Tuesday, August 4, 2026.

According to Dicky, this increase indicates that the misuse of AI in financial crimes is evolving and becoming increasingly sophisticated. He emphasized that AI is not the perpetrator itself but rather a tool used by criminals to make fraudulent schemes appear more convincing, execute them faster, and make them harder for the public to detect.

Fabricated Documents and Deepfake Technology

He explained that perpetrators are now capable of fabricating various digital identities, such as videos, photos, voice recordings, bank account numbers, phone numbers, and electronic documents. Furthermore, the identities of official institutions trusted by the public can also be manipulated using AI technology.

OJK noted that investment fraud utilizing deepfake technology involving public figures is the most frequently reported modus operandi. In practice, perpetrators use videos or photos of specific public figures to create the impression that the investment being offered is trustworthy.

Furthermore, OJK has received numerous reports regarding scams involving AI-based trading robots, online shopping offers via apps claiming to utilize AI technology, and fraudulent phone calls employing voice or face cloning technology.

"Almost all these schemes share the same objective, which is to build the victim's trust in the legitimacy of the offer, and to pressure or induce the victim into making a transaction or transferring funds. Ultimately resulting in financial loss for the public," said Dicky.

The Public are Advised to Caution and Verify

To mitigate the risk of falling victim to fraud, OJK urges the public to exercise caution and verify the legitimacy of transactions. The public is also advised to always check and verify any information received.

Additionally, OJK warns the public not to immediately trust phone numbers, photos, audio recordings, or videos circulating on digital platforms, as these can all be manipulated using AI. Therefore, it is advised to verify information by contacting the relevant parties directly or using official platforms before making any financial decisions.

Conclusion

OJK recorded 1,379 reports of financial fraud suspected of utilizing AI between November 2024 and the end of June 2026. According to OJK, perpetrators used AI to make scams more convincing by manipulating videos, photos, audio, and documents, and even mimicking the identities of official institutions. OJK urges the public to verify legitimacy when doing transactions.
