Jakarta, INTI - Mobile phones distributed for the European market will undergo drastic changes starting in February 2027. This policy is part of an effort to improve sustainability and extend the lifespan of electronic devices.
The change comes from the European Union’s new rules requiring mobile phone manufacturers to provide removable and user-replaceable batteries starting in 2027.
Aside from mobile phones, other devices are also affected by this regulation, including tablets and smart glasses. Nintendo is also reportedly preparing a replaceable battery for the Switch 2 console.

Free Provided Tool and Exception
However, this does not mean that all phones will go back to having batteries that can be popped out as old phones did. SamMobile reported that the regulation refers to batteries that are easily removable and replaceable by the end user. Therefore, they can likely be removed without special tools, unless provided free with the product.
Additionally, there is an exception to this regulation. Devices with batteries capable of retaining at least 80 percent capacity after 1,000 charge cycles are exempt from the requirement. This leaves some manufacturers open to retaining legacy designs.
