Meta Faces Potential Sanctions from The EU for Hindering Other AI Providers on WhatsApp

11 hours ago | Digital Technology

Jakarta, INTI - Meta Platforms Inc. faces a potential temporary ban from the European Union (EU) over a policy deemed to hinder competing artificial intelligence (AI) companies from operating on WhatsApp. The temporary ban may happen unless Meta provides a solution that alleviates the EU’s concerns.

In a statement of additional objections, the European Commission (EC) outlined its plan to implement the temporary measure to prevent serious and irreversible market impacts, while still considering Meta's response and defense rights.

Small Businesses Would be Burdened, Meta Said

This move comes after Meta introduced rules deemed to potentially restrict other AI providers from offering their business services through WhatsApp.

In response, Meta stated that the EC’s proposal could force large companies to use paid WhatsApp Business services for free, thereby burdening small businesses by “footing” their bills.

Under EU regulations, competition authorities have the authority to temporarily suspend suspicious business practices, although such decisions can be appealed to the EU's court in Luxembourg.

Sanctions for antitrust violations can reach up to 10% of annual global revenue, although this maximum is rarely applied, especially for temporary violations.
