Kemkomdigi Accelerates Post-Disaster Telecommunications Network Recovery in Aceh to 80.63 Percent

1 month ago | Network Infrastructure

Jakarta, INTI – Disruptions to telecommunications networks following the disaster left thousands of residents in Aceh struggling to communicate and access vital information. This situation posed a serious challenge, particularly during emergency conditions that require swift and accurate coordination. In response, the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Kemkomdigi) moved quickly to accelerate the restoration of network infrastructure. As a result, the majority of affected Base Transceiver Station (BTS) towers are now back in operation. The government announced this recovery progress on Friday, December 19, as part of its commitment to safeguarding public connectivity in disaster-affected areas.

BTS Recovery in Aceh Continues to Improve

The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs reported that the recovery of BTS towers across Aceh Province had reached 80.63 percent as of Friday, December 19,2025. This figure represents a significant increase compared to Tuesday December,16,2025 when recovery stood at only 45.58 percent.

Out of 23 affected regencies and cities, 20 have recorded network recovery levels exceeding 50 percent. With this progress, the majority of residents are now able to reconnect, communicate more effectively, and access digital services with greater ease.

Focus on Areas with Limited Access

Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid emphasized that the government is directing network recovery efforts to ensure the fulfillment of basic public needs, particularly in areas that continue to experience limited access to communication services.

She urged telecommunications operators to prioritize restoration efforts in regions where recovery remains below 50 percent, namely Aceh Tamiang Regency, Bener Meriah Regency, and Gayo Lues Regency. According to her, connectivity in these areas is crucial to prevent communities from feeling isolated during emergency situations.

The Role of Networks in Disaster Situations

Meutya explained that telecommunications networks play a vital role during disasters. Beyond supporting public safety, connectivity enables the coordination of aid, emergency services, and the gradual recovery of social and economic activities.

The government also expressed its appreciation for the dedication of telecommunications operators, field technicians, and all related stakeholders who continue to work under challenging conditions and potential risks to ensure that communication services can be restored for the public.

High Recovery Rates in Other Regions

In addition to Aceh, telecommunications infrastructure recovery in other disaster-affected regions has also shown encouraging results. In West Sumatra, BTS recovery has reached 99.14 percent, while North Sumatra recorded a recovery rate of 97.35 percent as of Friday, December,19,2025.

The government affirmed that it will continue to provide regular updates and ensure that connectivity restoration progresses until all affected areas regain normal access to communication services.

Connectivity Restoration as a National Priority

Meutya reaffirmed that the restoration of telecommunications networks in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra remains a top government priority. She stressed that every BTS brought back online has a direct impact on communities, particularly in supporting rescue operations and the distribution of aid.

Restored communication access is expected to accelerate community recovery while ensuring that no region is left behind during times of crisis.

Conclusion

The recovery of telecommunications networks in Aceh, which has now surpassed 80 percent, reflects the government’s strong commitment to maintaining public connectivity in the aftermath of disasters. By prioritizing areas that remain severely affected, the government aims to ensure that all residents can reconnect and gain equitable access to information.
