Indonesian Researchers Create Innovative Health and Food Solutions with Advanced Technology

8 months ago | Digital Health

Jakarta, INTI – Two Indonesian researchers, Hery Sutanto and Aulia Arif Iskandar, have successfully introduced innovations in health and food by combining local wisdom with advanced artificial intelligence (AI) technology. Their research was selected as the best national innovation product for the 2022–2025 period and was showcased directly at the Convention of Science, Technology, and Industry (STI) Indonesia 2025, in front of the President of Indonesia and cabinet members, demonstrating that Indonesian talent can compete on a global stage.

Healthy Candlenut Oil as a Local Food Alternative

Hery Sutanto, Dean of the Faculty of Life Sciences and Technology at Swiss German University (SGU), developed Kemirich Gold, a vegetable oil made from processed candlenuts containing Omega 3, 6, 9, DHA, EPA, LA, and Vitamin E. These nutrients support heart health in adults and promote child growth.

“Indonesia has extraordinary biodiversity. Candlenuts have long been seen as a kitchen supplement, but if processed correctly, their nutritional content can rival imported vegetable oils,” said Hery. The product has obtained halal certification and official distribution approval from BPOM RI, contributing to national food security and reducing dependence on imports.

AI-Based Medical Devices for Early Detection

In the health technology sector, Aulia Arif Iskandar, Head of the Biomedical Engineering Program at SGU, created the Dub-Dub Mini EKG and an AI-Based Digital Stethoscope. The Dub-Dub Mini EKG can detect abnormal heart rhythms in real time, send data to mobile phones via Bluetooth, and includes emergency alert and teleconsultation features.

Meanwhile, the Digital Stethoscope uses machine learning to analyze lung sounds and classify diseases based on recorded breathing patterns. Both devices have received awards from the Indonesian Ministry of Health, including the First-Ranked Leading Medical Device Research Product 2024, demonstrating that local technology can make a tangible impact on national healthcare services.

Research Contributions for Society and the Future

SGU Rector, Samuel P. Kusumocahyo, praised the achievements of Hery and Aulia. “Their innovations prove that university research is not just for academic journals but addresses real societal needs. This is a direct contribution to the nation and a better future,” he said.

Both researchers emphasized their commitment to providing accessible and beneficial solutions, ensuring that local technology can be widely utilized for Indonesia’s progress. Their presence at STI 2025 symbolizes that Indonesia possesses top talents ready to compete on the global stage.

Conclusion:
The innovations in candlenut oil and AI-based medical devices by Indonesian researchers show that combining local wisdom with advanced technology can provide real solutions for society. These products not only improve health and food security but also highlight the potential of local talent to compete globally.
