Jakarta, INTI – Indonesia is increasingly demonstrating its commitment to artificial intelligence (AI) development on a global scale. After successfully becoming the first country in Southeast Asia to complete UNESCO’s Readiness Assessment Methodology (RAM), Indonesia has now put forth its bid to host the AI Global South Forum. This move not only strengthens Indonesia’s position in responsible AI governance but also reinforces its role as a leader in digital innovation among developing nations.
Indonesia’s Strength in AI Development
In his meeting with UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General for Social and Human Sciences, Gabriela Ramos, Indonesia’s Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital (Wamenkomdigi), Nezar Patria, emphasized that Indonesia’s success in completing RAM is solid proof of its well-established and ethical AI ecosystem.
“This achievement is a testament to Indonesia’s commitment to developing a responsible and ethical artificial intelligence (AI) ecosystem,” said Nezar.
Nezar further highlighted that Indonesia’s collaboration with UNESCO opens up significant opportunities for the country to play a larger role in global AI governance. With a rapidly evolving digital ecosystem and increasingly mature AI policies, Indonesia has the potential to become a hub for AI innovation for developing nations across Asia, Africa, and the South Pacific.
UNESCO’s Support and Strategic Opportunities
UNESCO has welcomed Indonesia’s initiative to host the AI Global South Forum. Gabriela Ramos even encouraged Indonesia to start preparing for this significant opportunity.
“We strongly support Indonesia’s initiative to host the AI Global South Forum. This is an excellent opportunity for Indonesia to showcase its role as a key player in global AI development,” said Ramos.
Additionally, UNESCO has invited Indonesian AI experts to share their knowledge and assist other nations in developing their own RAM frameworks. With its extensive experience, Indonesia can serve as a model for other developing countries in establishing inclusive and sustainable AI policies.
Challenges and Future Prospects
Despite this promising opportunity, Indonesia also faces considerable challenges. Ethical and responsible AI implementation is a major concern, given the various social and economic impacts that AI technology can bring. Thus, preparations for hosting the AI Global South Forum must go beyond infrastructure and event planning to include broader strategies for global AI management.
As a nation with a vast digital population and rapid technological growth, Indonesia holds a unique position to lead global discussions on AI in developing countries. This strategic step will not only strengthen Indonesia’s role in the AI industry but also contribute to creating a more inclusive and sustainable digital future.
Conclusion
Indonesia’s bid to host the AI Global South Forum is a major step in solidifying its position in the global AI landscape. With UNESCO’s support and its successful completion of RAM, Indonesia is demonstrating leadership in developing responsible and ethical AI. If selected as the host, Indonesia has the potential to become a central hub for AI innovation among developing nations, proving that technology can be a powerful and inclusive tool for global progress.
