Jakarta, INTI - Indonesia has proposed strengthening regional cooperation in artificial intelligence (AI) education across ASEAN during the 2026 China-ASEAN Education Cooperation Week held in Guiyang, Guizhou Province, China. The initiative focuses on advancing AI curricula, teacher training, and joint research to accelerate AI education and innovation throughout the region.
Secretary General of Indonesia’s Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology, Badri Munir Sukoco, said the country aims to learn from China’s experience in AI curriculum reform, educator development, and computing infrastructure.
He noted that Guizhou’s transformation into one of China’s leading big data hubs demonstrates how strategic government policies can drive technological development beyond traditional industrial centers.
“I was quite surprised. Although Guizhou is located far from China’s coastal technology hubs, the government has successfully transformed it into the country’s big data center,” he said.
According to Badri, China’s progress in digital education and the AI industry offers valuable insights for Indonesia, particularly in developing technology hubs across different regions.
“China is significantly more advanced in AI, which gives Indonesia an opportunity to learn from its experience while expanding collaboration in this field,” he added.
Expanding AI Education and Research Partnership
Badri proposed a two-way partnership between Indonesia and China by integrating technology, research capabilities, and academic resources across multiple disciplines, including traditional medicine and advanced materials research.
He emphasized that while AI presents enormous opportunities, higher education institutions must also address challenges such as deepfakes, misinformation, and doxxing through stronger digital literacy and responsible AI education.
“Collaboration can only succeed when there is mutual trust. Building that trust requires face-to-face engagement. This cooperation week provides an ideal platform to exchange progress annually and accelerate the scale of AI collaboration,” he said.
Badri also announced that several Indonesian universities are expected to sign cooperation agreements with Guizhou University and Guizhou Institute of Technology. The partnerships will cover student and faculty exchange programs, as well as joint AI research initiatives.
