Indonesia Implements AI Biometric Immigration System to Accelerate Airport Services Nationwide

5 months ago | Artificial Intelligence

Jakarta, INTI – The steady growth of international tourist arrivals in recent years has created new challenges, particularly long queues and time-consuming immigration procedures. To address this need, Indonesia has officially introduced the Seamless Corridor, the world’s first artificial intelligence (AI)–based biometric immigration system that allows passengers to pass immigration checks without presenting physical documents. The system was launched at Soekarno Hatta International Airport in Jakarta as part of the national digitalization program “All Indonesia.” With this new technology, the government aims to make the arrival process faster, safer, and more convenient for travelers coming into the country.

Launch of the Seamless Corridor: The World’s First AI Immigration Technology

Indonesia is now the first country to fully operate an AI-driven biometric immigration system. The Seamless Corridor uses facial recognition to automatically identify passengers as they walk through a dedicated corridor. No physical passports, no long queues passengers simply walk through, and authentication is completed within seconds.

This technology is a core component of the “All Indonesia” program, which aims to simplify the entire entry process, especially for international tourists and priority groups such as the elderly and persons with disabilities. After Soekarno Hatta, the service will be installed next at Juanda Airport Surabaya and expanded to major airports across Indonesia, including Bali.

How Does the System Work?

The Seamless Corridor integrates three main stages of the immigration process:

  1. Data Sharing : Passengers upload their passport details through the All Indonesia app.
  2. Background Check : Security checks are performed before passengers arrive.
  3. Final Authentication : As they pass through the corridor, the system scans the passenger’s face and matches it with the stored data.

In previous trials, the system processed more than 30 passengers per minute and has supported over 50,000 Hajj pilgrims using similar mechanisms. This success strengthens its readiness for nationwide implementation.

All Indonesia App: A One-Stop Entry Service

As the primary platform supporting the Seamless Corridor, the All Indonesia app provides access to various immigration and health-related services. In its initial phase, it prioritizes senior citizens and individuals with disabilities, but will eventually be available to all passengers. The integrated services include:

  • Immigration
  • Customs
  • Health Declaration
  • Quarantine

With a single application, the entire entry process becomes simpler and more efficient.

Global and Local Technology Collaboration

The development of the Seamless Corridor is the result of a collaboration between Amadeus, a global travel technology company from Spain, and Sinergi Teknoglobal Perkasa, an Indonesian IT firm. Andy Syach, CEO of Sinergi Teknoglobal, emphasized that this project not only delivers world-class solutions but also enables technology transfer to local experts.

Meanwhile, Rudy Daniello, EVP AirOps at Amadeus, described the system as the “Jewel in the Crown” of seamless travel technologies, combining digital identity and biometrics in a secure and user-friendly way.

Benefits for Passengers, Officers, and the Nation

For Passengers:

  • Faster arrival process
  • No long queues
  • No need to carry physical documents

For Immigration Officers:

  • Reduced workload
  • Better focus on crowd management during peak hours
  • More time to assist passengers with special needs

For the Country:

  • Strengthens Indonesia’s image as a global technology pioneer
  • Boosts the competitiveness of the tourism sector
  • Supports digital economic growth

With faster and more convenient services, international tourist visits to destinations like Bali, Yogyakarta, and Lombok are expected to increase.

The Future of Indonesian Airports

The implementation of the Seamless Corridor is a strategic step for Indonesia in building a world-class airport ecosystem. After its proven success in serving Hajj and Umrah pilgrims, this biometric system is now moving toward nationwide deployment. This modernization reflects the government’s commitment to delivering a seamless, secure, and AI-powered travel experience.

Conclusion

The introduction of the Seamless Corridor marks a new era in Indonesia’s immigration system. Supported by artificial intelligence, facial recognition, and integrated digital services through All Indonesia, the country has positioned itself as a global pioneer in document-free immigration technology. This initiative not only accelerates the entry process but also strengthens Indonesia’s role as a hub of modern travel innovation and a leading world-class tourism destination.
