Google Launches Real-Time Voice Translation Feature on Meet to Support Cross-Language Communication

10 months ago | Artificial Intelligence

Jakarta, INTI – Tech giant Google has once again made waves in the digital communication space. At the Google I/O 2025 event on Tuesday May 20, the company announced the launch of a real-time voice translation feature on its video conferencing platform, Google Meet. This new capability allows users speaking different languages to connect and communicate seamlessly without language barriers.

The feature leverages Large Language Audio Model (LLAM) developed by Google DeepMind, which not only translates speech instantly but also preserves the speaker’s original intonation, expression, and vocal tone, creating a more human-like and natural experience.

Smooth Translations Without Long Pauses

Google explained that the feature is designed with ultra-low latency, allowing conversations to flow smoothly without delays. This marks a significant leap from previous solutions that relied on text and often disrupted the natural rhythm of communication.

“This feature ensures your voice, tone, and expressions remain intact even when translated so conversations still feel natural,” said Yulie Kwon Kim, VP of Product for Google Workspace.

One of the examples shared by Google includes a grandchild who only speaks English now being able to have a direct conversation with grandparents who only speak Spanish. In the business world, this technology unlocks global collaboration without language limitations.

Original Voice Still Audible, with Translations Overlaid

When activated, users will still hear the original voice faintly, while the translated voice is clearly played over it. This approach creates a more immersive and realistic experience compared to hearing only the translated version.

The feature was launched on May 20, 2025, in beta version for Google AI Pro and Ultra users. It initially supports English and Spanish, with more languages like Italian, German, and Portuguese coming in the following weeks.

Heading to Enterprise Use

Google also confirmed that the feature will be tested for business and Workspace customers later this year. In the meantime, users who have not yet received access to real-time voice translation can still use Google Meet’s text translation tool.

To enable translated captions:

  1. Open Google Meet and tap the screen
  2. Tap “More Controls” > “Settings”
  3. Under “Captions,” select the translation language
  4. Save and return to the video screen
  5. Close the toolbar

Conclusion

The release of real-time voice translation in Google Meet marks a major step forward in eliminating language barriers in digital communication. By combining cutting-edge AI technology with a focus on human experience, Google is providing a powerful solution for cross-cultural interaction both personal and professional.
