This means that anyone trying to access user accounts through Chrome on an unlocked device will be blocked by authentication systems like fingerprint, facial recognition, or other screen lock methods.
Chrome Becomes the Focus of Security Enhancements
Ironically, Chrome Google’s flagship product has not previously supported biometric authentication, even though Google Password Manager already has it. This gap meant that anyone accessing an unlocked phone could freely log into sensitive accounts via Chrome.
Google is now addressing this security flaw. According to a Telegram user named Micha, the biometric feature is currently being tested and appears close to official release.
Wording Change Signals Feature Launch
In the latest Chrome version, the setting “Authenticate with biometrics before filling passwords” has been changed to “Verify it’s you to autofill passwords.”
Although this seems like a minor change, the accompanying description confirms that users will soon be able to verify their identity using fingerprint, facial recognition, or screen pattern before Chrome autofills any credentials.
Most notably, the phrase “Coming soon to Chrome” in the feature description strongly signals that this security update will be natively integrated into Chrome for Android in the near future.
So far, Google has not announced an official release date. However, the feature’s appearance in beta and limited testing phases suggests that its public launch is imminent.
Typically, updates like this are rolled out gradually via Chrome app updates, so full availability may take a few weeks.
