East Kalimantan's Batoq Kelo Hydroelectric Power Plant Project Costs Rp13 Trillion

7 hours ago | Green Industrial

Jakarta, INTI - Construction of the Batoq Kelo Hydroelectric Power Plant (PLTA) in East Kalimantan with a capacity of 300 Megawatt (MW) has officially begun. This new renewable energy project is expected to be the largest PLTA currently under development in the province.

Special Presidential Envoy for Energy and Climate, Hashim Djojohadikusumo, called the Batoq Kelo PLTA a strategic step by the government to accelerate the energy transition towards the net-zero emission target by 2060.

"It is currently the largest renewable energy project in East Kalimantan," said Hashim in Samarinda on Monday, May 25.

According to him, the development of the PLTA plays a crucial role in strengthening national energy security, especially amid global geopolitical dynamics that could affect fossil fuel supplies.

Hashim also appreciated the commitment of investors who continue to directly monitor the project's progress despite the construction site being quite remote, approximately 600 kilometers from Samarinda. The project's investment value is estimated at nearly Rp13 trillion.

Meanwhile, the President Director of PT PLN (Persero), Darmawan Prasodjo, stated that the Batoq Kelo PLTA in Mahakam Ulu Regency has great potential as a cost-competitive electricity source compared to coal-fired power plants.

Benefits for the Region

Darmawan is optimistic that the PLTS can be completed ahead of the initial five-year target. In addition to supporting the national clean energy mix, the project is also believed to be capable of creating new jobs, particularly in the construction and civil work sectors, involving the local community.

East Kalimantan Governor, Rudy Mas'ud, stated that the construction of the Batoq Kelo PLTA aligns with the regional vision to make East Kalimantan a carbon trading hub in the Asia-Pacific region.

Rudy stated that the power plant will not only support the energy needs of urban areas but also expand electricity access to remote areas in Mahakam Ulu Regency. He added that the project will also be accompanied by the construction of supporting infrastructure, including a 122-kilometer road and a 120-meter bridge, which will strengthen connectivity between regions in Kalimantan.

The East Kalimantan Provincial Government has also reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a green investment climate to ensure sustainable economic impacts and prosperity for local communities.

Conclusion

Construction of the 300 MW Batoq Kelo PLTA in East Kalimantan has officially begun. The nearly Rp13 trillion project is considered strategic for accelerating the energy transition toward net-zero emissions by 2060. PLN stated that the PLTA has the potential to generate electricity at a more competitive cost than coal-fired power plants. In addition to supporting a clean energy mix, the project is also expected to create new jobs, expand electricity access to remote areas, and be supported by road and bridge construction to improve connectivity in East Kalimantan.
