Digital Realty X Bersama: A Global Partnership Accelerating Indonesia's Data Center Industry

1 year ago | Data Center & Cloud Computing

Jakarta, INTI – Indonesia's data center industry is increasingly attracting global investors. This is marked by the establishment of a joint venture between Bersama Digital Infrastructure Asia (BDIA) and Digital Realty, a global giant in data center facilities. The joint company, named Digital Realty Bersama, is expected to facilitate both local and global companies in leveraging data center-based technology services in Indonesia.

Strategic Partnership with Balanced Ownership

Digital Realty Bersama is a joint venture equally owned (50:50) by BDIA and Digital Realty. BDIA will contribute its carrier-neutral data center assets, Bersama Digital Data Centres (BDDC), to the joint company. The majority shareholders of BDDC include Provident Capital Partners, Saratoga Investama Sedaya, a consortium led by Macquarie Asset Management, and Distro Hub.

Digital Realty itself is a global company with over 300 data center facilities across more than 50 cities, with a valuation exceeding US$ 61 billion. With its extensive industry experience, the presence of Digital Realty Bersama is expected to accelerate the development of Indonesia's digital infrastructure.

Data Center Expansion in Jakarta

Digital Realty Bersama currently owns and operates interconnected data center campuses at two strategic locations in Jakarta:

  1. CGK 11, a newly launched data center in Central Jakarta with an initial IT capacity of 5 megawatts (MW), with expansion potential up to 32 MW.
  2. CGK 10, an existing data center operating in West Jakarta.

Additionally, the connectivity of these facilities will be enhanced by ServiceFabric, Digital Realty's service platform, which allows customers to centrally manage complex digital workflows and configure hybrid infrastructure that supports artificial intelligence (AI)-based operations.

Impact on Indonesia's Digital Industry

Currently, Indonesia's data center penetration is still relatively low, at approximately 5 MW per 1 million people. This figure is comparable to the Philippines but significantly lags behind Malaysia (95 MW) and Singapore (245 MW). With the establishment of Digital Realty Bersama, the quality of digital infrastructure and the speed of digital transformation in Indonesia are expected to improve significantly.

"This technology will make it easier for local and global multinational companies to digitally interact with various providers worldwide if they colocate in our facilities. As simple as that," said Angelo Syailendra, President Director of BDIA, during a press conference in Jakarta onTuesday, March 18, 2025.

Conclusion

The partnership between BDIA and Digital Realty marks a significant step in the development of Indonesia's data center industry. With more advanced infrastructure and increasing capacity, Indonesia has the potential to become a leading data hub in Southeast Asia. This investment not only enhances national digital economic competitiveness but also generates new foreign exchange sources, accelerates digital transformation, and creates business opportunities across various industries in the country.
