Cloud Regional Open Source Summit (CROSS) Indonesia 2026 Strengthens Digital Sovereignty Agenda

10 hours ago | Data Center and Cloud Computing

Jakarta, INTI - Cloud Regional Open Source Summit (CROSS) Indonesia 2026 was held at Universitas Jenderal Achmad Yani (UNJAYA) in Gamping, Sleman, Yogyakarta, serving as a collaborative forum to advance digital sovereignty through the adoption of open-source technologies and local cloud infrastructure.

The event brought together stakeholders from government, industry, academia, and technology communities to discuss strategies for building a more independent, secure, and regulation-compliant digital ecosystem. Digital talents, from students to industry professionals, actively participated in knowledge sharing throughout the forum.

Organized by Onno Center in collaboration with Cloud in Asia and UNJAYA, and supported by Sivali Cloud Technology, CROSS Indonesia 2026 integrated two major agendas: the Open Source Summit and the Ubuntu Release Party.

Driving Digital Sovereignty Through Open Source
Carrying the theme “Advancing Indonesia’s Digital Sovereignty through Open Source,” the forum positioned open technologies as a key foundation for strengthening data independence, cybersecurity, and transparent digital governance.

CEO of Sivali Cloud Technology, Wong Sui Jan, emphasized that open source offers a strategic approach to reducing reliance on proprietary platforms. He noted that open systems provide institutions with greater control over infrastructure and data, ensuring better security, efficiency, and digital independence.

Meanwhile, Ryo Ardian highlighted the importance of cross-sector collaboration. He stated that synergy between industry, academia, and communities is essential in building a sustainable and sovereign national cloud ecosystem.

Collaboration Across Ecosystems and Talent Development
The event was attended by prominent figures including Onno W. Purbo, founder of Onno Center and Rector of ITTS, as well as Chanief Budi Setiawan, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Engineering and Information Technology at UNJAYA.

Technology practitioners and open-source communities, including Ubuntu Indonesia Community led by Veros Mohamed, also took part alongside contributors such as M Alif R from IMPHNEN.

In his remarks, Chanief stressed that universities play a critical role not only in producing graduates but also in fostering innovation, collaboration, and leadership in independent digital transformation. He added that CROSS 2026 serves as a strategic platform to formulate national open-source standards, define technology strategies, and explore best practices across sectors.

Strengthening National Cloud and Data Governance
CROSS Indonesia 2026 highlighted key priorities, including strengthening data sovereignty across government, education, and regulated industries. Institutions are encouraged to manage infrastructure independently using technologies such as Ubuntu, OpenStack, and Kubernetes to ensure control over data location, privacy, and regulatory compliance.

The forum also aligned with Indonesia’s national digital policies, including the implementation of Personal Data Protection Law (UU PDP No. 27/2022), encouraging migration from proprietary cloud platforms to locally managed open systems.

In addition, discussions emphasized the importance of building a strong local cloud ecosystem by empowering national cloud providers and fostering collaboration between universities, cloud engineers, and developers.

Data protection strategies were also explored through open architectures, including DevSecOps practices, Linux-based security, and cloud observability tools, ensuring system resilience, transparency, and compliance.

Conclusion

CROSS Indonesia 2026 underscores the growing importance of open-source technology as a strategic pillar in achieving digital sovereignty. By fostering collaboration across sectors and empowering local cloud ecosystems, the forum reinforces Indonesia’s commitment to building a secure, independent, and sustainable digital future while nurturing the next generation of digital talent.
