Cikarang National Data Center: Indonesia's Digital Infrastructure of the Future

Jakarta, INTI – Minister of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) Meutya Hafid has set a target for the permanent National Data Center (PDN) in Cikarang, Bekasi, West Java, to be fully operational by April 2025 at the latest.

Construction Process and Funding

The construction of the Cikarang PDN began in 2022 under a government-to-government (G-to-G) financing scheme, with financial assistance from the French government. The Indonesian government secured a loan of 164,679,680 Euros, approximately IDR 2.7 trillion, to support this project. Initially, the data center was scheduled for completion by August 17, 2024, to coincide with Indonesia’s Independence Day and was planned to be inaugurated by President Joko Widodo. However, due to project adjustments and scheduling considerations, the timeline has been revised to April 2025.

Specifications and Capacity of Cikarang PDN

The Cikarang PDN will feature high-tech specifications, including processors with a capacity of 25,000 cores, 200 terabytes of memory, and a maximum storage capacity of 40 petabytes or 40 million gigabits. Additionally, the power supply will be 20 megawatts, with the potential to be increased to 80 megawatts.

In terms of security, the Cikarang PDN is built to Tier 4 standards, the highest level in the global data center system, ensuring uninterrupted network operation. Furthermore, the cooling system uses a world-class water cooling system to maintain efficiency and reliability.

Cybersecurity and Monitoring

Deputy Minister of Komdigi, Nezar Patria, emphasized that the Cikarang PDN has entered the final stages of completion and monitoring before full operation. One of the critical aspects of this phase is cybersecurity. The government has collaborated with the National Cyber and Crypto Agency (BSSN) to assess cybersecurity measures to prevent potential cyber threats.

"Especially regarding cybersecurity, we have sought assistance from BSSN to conduct a review to ensure that all necessary instruments for preventing cyber attacks have been implemented in the PDN," Nezar stated.

Impact and Benefits of the National Data Center

In addition to serving as a secure and reliable national data storage hub, the area surrounding the Cikarang PDN will be dedicated to cloud computing services and high-tech industries. The facility is built on a five-hectare site, with a total building area of nearly 16,000 square meters.

Conclusion

The Cikarang National Data Center is a strategic initiative to strengthen Indonesia’s digital infrastructure. With its high specifications, top-tier security systems, and cutting-edge technology, this PDN is expected to become the backbone of national data storage and accelerate digital transformation across various sectors. Despite the delay until April 2025, the Cikarang PDN remains highly anticipated as a crucial foundation for a more advanced and secure national digital ecosystem.
