China’s Flying Taxis Offer Fast Intercity Travel

10 months ago | E-MOBILITY

Jakarta, INTI – Imagine traveling from Shanghai to Suzhou in just 15 minutes no traffic jams, no stress, and at a fare comparable to a high-speed train. This vision is now becoming reality through electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) flying taxi technology showcased at the China International Import Expo (CIIE) 2025 in Shanghai, November 2025. The exhibition presented a complete flying taxi ecosystem, including futuristic terminals, check-in procedures, security areas, and ticketing systems. This transportation solution addresses urban congestion and the growing demand for rapid intercity mobility. With this technology, urban air mobility is no longer a futuristic concept but a key component of China’s national strategy.

5-Passenger Electric Aircraft: Fast and Eco-Friendly

The centerpiece of the exhibition was a prototype five-passenger electric aircraft with advanced specifications: a wingspan of 15 meters, a fuselage length of 10 meters, a top speed of 200 km/h, and a range of 250 km per charge. Powered by cutting-edge electric motors and batteries, the aircraft is energy-efficient and environmentally friendly. China positions this technology as part of its “low-altitude economy” strategy in the 15th Five-Year Plan, affirming flying taxis as a practical and operational public transport solution.

Global Trends in Urban Air Mobility

China is not the only country developing flying taxis. South Korea is testing Volocopter services, France used air taxis during the Paris 2024 Olympics, and Australia is beginning to implement Uber Air services. However, China is the most aggressive in preparing infrastructure, regulations, and full operational simulations, demonstrating readiness for large-scale deployment.

Why China Focuses on eVTOL

Electric flying taxis address multiple urban challenges. They reduce traffic congestion, lower carbon emissions, accelerate intercity connectivity, and create new technology-driven economic opportunities. The Chinese government views eVTOLs as a future transportation solution on par with high-speed trains and electric cars, marking a new era of efficient and sustainable urban mobility.

Indonesia and the Future of Mobility

CIIE 2025 highlights that flying taxis are more than a technological trend they represent a new paradigm in human mobility. With affordable fares and mature technology, integrating air mobility into everyday life is increasingly feasible. In the coming years, intercity travel within minutes without traffic congestion could become a reality, and other countries, including Indonesia, may adopt this model.

Conclusion
China’s flying taxis demonstrate that electric air mobility is an efficient, eco-friendly future transport solution capable of alleviating urban congestion. Comprehensive infrastructure and regulatory readiness make large-scale operations feasible, ushering in a new era of urban travel in modern cities.
