Jakarta, INTI - The Center of Economic and Law Studies (CELIOS) has emphasized that strengthening cybersecurity and data protection must become a top priority to sustain the rapid growth of Indonesia's digital economy as online transactions continue to expand.
Secure Data Centers Are Essential
Nailul Huda, Director of Digital Economy at CELIOS, stated that the country's growing network of data centers must be supported by robust security systems covering both physical infrastructure and software.
He stressed that modern data centers should not only meet high construction standards but also be equipped with advanced cybersecurity capabilities to defend against increasingly sophisticated cyber threats.
According to Huda, cyberattacks can originate from multiple sources, making comprehensive data center security a critical requirement rather than an optional investment. As more businesses and consumers rely on digital platforms for commerce and financial transactions, protecting digital infrastructure has become increasingly important.
Cyberattacks Can Disrupt Economic Activity
Huda warned that cyber incidents have consequences beyond the technology sector, with the potential to disrupt broader economic activity.
He explained that attacks targeting data centers can interrupt online business operations and digital financial services, temporarily preventing people from conducting transactions and slowing the circulation of money throughout the economy.
Referring to a major cyberattack several years ago that reportedly caused economic losses of around Rp6 trillion, Huda emphasized the importance of strengthening cybersecurity to prevent similar incidents in the future.
He added that secure and reliable data centers are fundamental to ensuring uninterrupted digital transactions, attracting technology investment, and strengthening confidence among businesses and the public.
Huda also highlighted the need to accelerate the implementation of regulations derived from Indonesia's Personal Data Protection Law, arguing that stronger data governance will enhance cybersecurity while improving the country's competitiveness as a destination for digital investment.
