BRIN Introduces SWx AI that Can Predict Space Weather Faster and More Accurately

5 hours ago | Artificial Intelligence

Jakarta, INTI - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) has developed a system called the Space Weather Intelligent Forecasting System (SWx AI), built on the Space Weather Information and Forecast Services (SWIFtS) framework. This system is developed to facilitate checking various numerical data, reading computer prediction results, and analyzing complex images or graphs.

Tiar Dani, an Associate Researcher at the Center for Space Research (PRA) of BRIN, said this system is expected to help predict space weather conditions more quickly, automatically, and accurately. Space weather itself is a condition of solar and space activity that can affect Earth, such as disruptions to satellites, communication signals, GPS, and even the power grid.

SWx AI Uses Latest Data

SWx AI utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) technology, specifically large language models (LLMs), which can work like a smart assistant. This system can automatically retrieve the latest data from various sources, read computer prediction results, and analyze solar observation images without requiring manual review by humans.

"SWx AI is designed to be more secure against misinformation or 'AI hallucinations' by limiting the analyzed data to a specific timeframe, for example, the last 24 to 72 hours, and using precisely defined rules to predict and analyze space conditions in Indonesia," said Tiar.

The Head of PRA BRIN, Emanuel Sungging Mumpuni, hopes the latest research findings at PRA can be utilized by various parties.

"We hope that SWx AI, connected to the SWIFtS space weather service platform, can be used as a fast and efficient early warning system and benefit various parties, including fellow researchers, academics, and the wider community. This will allow this research to be more applicable," said Sungging.

He hopes the development of SWx AI will support space weather services in Indonesia to be more responsive, especially in anticipating technological disruptions influenced by solar activity.

Conclusion

The Center for Space Research (PRA) of BRIN has developed an artificial intelligence system called SWx AI to help predict space weather more quickly and accurately. This system is capable of analyzing data, computer prediction results, and solar observation images to detect potential disruptions to satellites, GPS, communications, and power grids due to solar activity. It is hoped that this technology can become a useful space weather early warning system for researchers and the public.
