Jakarta, INTI - The artificial intelligence (AI) technology is considered a major driver of transformation in the global landscape of digital infrastructure and connectivity. Budi Satria Dharma Purba, Director of Wholesale & International Service at Telkom Indonesia, said that while Telkom’s internal data shows conventional cloud service usage growing at about 30% annually, the rise of AI has accelerated demand for digital infrastructure far faster.

"When discussing AI-driven demand, we are no longer talking about 50% or 70% growth. We are seeing a surge in demand of up to 10 to 20 times current levels," said Budi on Wednesday, August 26, 2026.

According to Budi, AI computing requirements differ from those of conventional cloud infrastructure, which typically prioritizes distributing content as close to the end-user as possible. AI infrastructure demands inter-computer connectivity and massive data processing capabilities utilizing GPUs. This creates a need for AI corridors, which are integrated cable networks characterized by high capacity, low latency, and resilient, diverse routing to ensure continuous connectivity.

"Our biggest challenge right now is no longer finding demand, but ensuring that supply capacity is available in sufficient quantities and at the right time," said Budi.

Other Factors that Influence Demands

He added that the construction of AI-ready data centers in Jakarta and Batam is consuming vast amounts of bandwidth capacity. He pointed out that while laying submarine cables can take up to five years, the available capacity could potentially be fully utilized within just one year due to the intense demand from the AI ​​ecosystem.

Connectivity risks are further complicated by global geopolitical dynamics, including the situation in the Middle East and instability in the Strait of Hormuz. Disruptions or damage to submarine cables at strategic points could have widespread repercussions for connectivity linking Asia and Europe.

To mitigate these risks, industry strategies are shifting from providing just two redundant paths to establishing four or five alternative routes. On the other hand, shifting global trade patterns and regional geopolitical dynamics are seen as opportunities for Indonesia to strengthen its position within the global connectivity ecosystem.

Through cross-border collaboration and the integration of capital, technology, and global talent, Telkom Group is optimistic that Indonesia can evolve not only into a connectivity destination but also into a global digital hub in the future.
