Jakarta, INTI - The Indonesian Cyber Media Association (AMSI) said the media industry is facing challenges driven by changing audience behavior and the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI).
AMSI Deputy Chairperson Citra Dyah Prastuti said changes in how people access information require media organizations to better understand their audiences and deliver content that provides meaningful value to the public.
“Therefore, media organizations need to understand who their audiences are and provide content that is useful to the public,” Citra said during the fifth anniversary celebration of AMSI Riau Islands in Tanjungpinang on Sunday.
According to Citra, people now obtain information not only from conventional media outlets but also through social media and content creators.
In addition to changing audience behavior, the rapid development of AI is also reshaping the media industry, as the technology can process and summarize information within a short period.
Citra said this situation makes it increasingly important for media organizations to strengthen journalistic capabilities that are difficult to replace with technology, particularly through verification and direct fact-checking in the field.
“Journalistic work involving verification, fact-checking, and direct reporting is essential to maintaining media credibility amid the rapid flow of digital information,” she said.
Media Credibility Remains Essential
AMSI Riau Islands Chairman Jailani said the organization’s fifth anniversary serves as an opportunity for media companies to reflect on the rapid changes taking place across the industry.
He said AMSI continues to promote the development of professional cyber media and journalistic practices that comply with applicable standards.
“The reality today is that many media outlets are being used for certain interests. The responsibility of the media is not to the media itself, but to the public,” Jailani said.
According to him, the dynamic nature of the media industry and changing business conditions should not weaken media companies’ commitment to delivering accurate and balanced reporting.
Currently, 12 media outlets are members of AMSI Riau Islands: Angkaberita.id, Batampos.co.id, Ulasan.co, TribunBatam.id, Batamnews.co.id, Presmedia.id, Kepripedia.com, HarianKepri.com, Beritaibukota.com, Inikepri.com, Gurindam.id, and Mejaredaksi.co.id.
Jailani said the sustainability of the media industry requires support and collaboration from various stakeholders, including the government, law enforcement agencies, businesses, universities, community leaders, civil society organizations, and the wider public.
“We believe that the media’s journey never takes place in isolation. The government, law enforcement agencies, businesses, universities, community leaders, civil society organizations, and other elements of society have all contributed to building cooperation with media professionals,” he said.
Media and Government Share a Role in Public Information
Meanwhile, Riau Islands Governor Ansar Ahmad said the media plays an important role in delivering information to the public, promoting the region, and helping maintain social order.
Ansar also expressed hope that media organizations would help the public access reliable information and avoid misinformation.
“The media and the government are like two sides of the same coin that cannot be separated. We hope the media can serve as a means of education and information for the public,” Ansar said.
The fifth anniversary celebration of AMSI Riau Islands also featured awards for several figures, institutions, and organizations in recognition of their support and contributions to strengthening the region’s cyber media ecosystem.
Conclusion
The rapid development of AI and changing audience behavior are reshaping Indonesia’s media landscape. Amid these changes, media organizations are emphasizing journalism, verification, and fact-checking as key elements in maintaining credibility and delivering reliable information to the public.
