Jakarta, INTI - Indonesia’s Coordinating Minister for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections, Yusril Ihza Mahendra, said the growing use of artificial intelligence (AI) in everyday life is an important factor for the government to consider when formulating policies.
Yusril made the statement during a meeting with the US-ASEAN Business Council (USABC) in Jakarta on Tuesday.
According to Yusril, the rapid adoption of AI needs to be addressed through policies that continue to protect creators and their works.
“The development of technology is driving the use of AI in everyday life, while protecting creators remains equally important. The interests of platforms, creators, and the public must be balanced,” Yusril said.
AI Becomes a Key Consideration in Copyright Bill
The development of AI is among the factors being considered in discussions surrounding the Draft Copyright Bill.
As the government reviews the proposed legislation, it needs to balance the interests of various stakeholders affected by the regulation.
These stakeholders include service platforms, technology companies, creators, and the public as beneficiaries of creative works and digital services.
Yusril also emphasized that legal certainty is essential to maintaining sustainable investment in Indonesia.
He said the Coordinating Ministry for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections serves as a platform for consultation and communication, bringing together the government and various stakeholders to discuss policies and regulations.
The business community is among the stakeholders involved in these discussions.
Yusril stressed that regulatory frameworks should take into account the interests of different parties, particularly when addressing developments in technology and the digital economy.
USABC Encourages Government-Business Dialogue
During the meeting, US-ASEAN Business Council Indonesia Chief Country Representative Nugraheni Utami expressed appreciation for the ministry’s openness to engaging with the US business community.
USABC views dialogue between the government and business sector as important for providing greater clarity on policy direction while allowing industries to share their perspectives.
Businesses can also contribute international practices that may be relevant to the development of policies and regulations in Indonesia.
“We hope to continue sharing industry perspectives and relevant international practices as policies and regulations in Indonesia continue to evolve,” Nugraheni said.
Data and Cybersecurity Also Discussed
The meeting was attended by representatives of several global technology companies and included discussions on policies and regulations related to the digital economy.
Key topics included data utilization, AI development, cybersecurity, and legal certainty for businesses and investors.
The meeting also provided a forum for the government and private sector to exchange views on several proposed regulations.
Among the regulations discussed were the Copyright Bill, the One Data Indonesia Bill, and the Cybersecurity and Cyber Resilience Bill.
The Coordinating Ministry for Law, Human Rights, Immigration, and Corrections will review the feedback presented during the meeting before preparing recommendations for relevant ministries and government agencies.
The meeting further strengthened consultation between the government and business community in shaping policies, particularly in areas related to investment, digital transformation, AI, data governance, and cybersecurity.
