Jakarta, INTI - The government is targeting Indonesia to become a regional hub for artificial intelligence (AI). This target was announced by Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, at the World Artificial Intelligence Cooperation Organization (WAICO) event in Shanghai, China.
Airlangga stated that AI is now a crucial part of the global technological transformation, changing economic structures, national competitiveness, and the direction of technological sovereignty. Therefore, Indonesia does not want to simply act as a market or consumer of technology, but also become an active player in the development of the global AI ecosystem.
"Indonesia does not want to be just a spectator or consumer in the artificial intelligence competition. We are active architects at the forefront of the digital era," Airlangga stated at the High-Level Meeting of the WAICO Founding State on Saturday, July 18, 2026.
Indonesia’s Strategies
To support this ambition, Airlangga said the Indonesian government is preparing a number of foundations, including the National AI Roadmap. The roadmap will serve as a guideline for the development of the national AI ecosystem. This roadmap encompasses digital infrastructure development, talent development, strengthening research and innovation, and implementing responsible AI governance.
According to Airlangga, Indonesia has significant potential in developing the AI industry. Until 2026, the number of internet users in Indonesia has reached approximately 235 million, with a penetration rate of approximately 81%. Furthermore, data center infrastructure continues to grow. Indonesia currently has 182 data centers, with the largest concentrations in Jakarta with 94 facilities and Batam with 16 facilities.
Airlangga assessed that the growth of cloud computing and AI services is expected to continue driving the need for national data center capacity while opening up new investment opportunities in the digital sector.
Partnership with Global Company
The government has also established a strategic partnership in the semiconductor and AI sector with ARM Holdings since February 2026. The partnership is aimed at strengthening Indonesia's position in the semiconductor industry value chain and supporting the development of AI as a pillar of national digitalization.
With projected economic growth of 5.4% in 2026, the government is optimistic that Indonesia can become a driver of AI growth in the region and contribute to global AI governance through WAICO.
