Telkomsat Advances GeoTSat for Forest Fire Monitoring and Post-Disaster Assessment

Jakarta, INTI - PT Telkom Satelit Indonesia (Telkomsat) is advancing its Earth Intelligence capabilities through the GeoTSat platform, which transforms Earth observation data into actionable information for monitoring forest and land fires as well as assessing areas affected by disasters.

The technology leverages advances in satellite systems to monitor changes on the Earth’s surface more quickly and in greater detail. Satellite imagery is processed and analyzed to provide insights into how specific areas are changing over time.

Through GeoTSat, users can access information on the location of detected changes, the size of affected areas, current conditions, and how changes develop over time.

GeoTSat Monitors Forest and Land Fire Hotspots

One application of the technology is Karhutla GeoTSat, a satellite data-based dashboard designed to visualize the distribution of hotspots across Indonesia.

Karhutla GeoTSat utilizes data from NASA’s Fire Information for Resource Management System (FIRMS) to provide information on hotspots and thermal activity.

The data is presented through geospatial visualization, allowing users to identify areas that require further attention and monitoring.

The platform is also equipped with a Fire AI Assistant, powered by generative artificial intelligence (AI), which helps users interact with and better understand the information displayed on the dashboard.

Hotspot data serves as an initial reference for identifying areas that require further observation before more detailed monitoring is conducted.

When greater detail is required, monitoring can be continued using high-resolution satellite imagery to provide a clearer view of conditions in specific locations.

High-Resolution Satellite Imagery Used in Bromo

To support more detailed monitoring, Telkomsat has partnered with STAR.VISION to utilize satellite imagery with resolutions of up to 50 centimeters.

The imagery can be targeted at specific locations, enabling monitoring teams to examine affected areas in greater detail.

One application was conducted in the Bromo area of East Java to assess conditions following a fire.

Based on an analysis of high-resolution satellite imagery, the area identified as potentially affected by the fire within the sampled region was estimated at approximately 1,325 hectares.

The technology can support a monitoring process ranging from broad hotspot identification and targeted observation using high-resolution imagery to more detailed geospatial analysis.

The resulting analysis can provide information on incident locations, the distribution of impacts, and estimated affected areas.

Telkomsat Turns Satellite Data into Actionable Information

Telkomsat Director of Development Anggoro K. Widiawan said the use of satellite data is evolving beyond simply producing images of the Earth’s surface toward generating information that provides greater value to users.

“Through GeoTSat, we aim to take satellite data utilization beyond simply viewing images of the Earth’s surface. Earth Intelligence enables this data to be transformed into information that is easier to understand, from identifying indications of an event and determining affected areas to monitoring changes in regional conditions over time,” said Anggoro.

He added that collaboration with technology partners is part of Telkomsat’s efforts to strengthen these capabilities and expand their benefits to a wider range of users.

GeoTSat combines satellite data, high-resolution imagery, geospatial analysis, and artificial intelligence to transform Earth observation data into more accessible and actionable information.

The resulting insights can support analysis and decision-making based on the changing conditions of specific areas.

Technology Applications Extend from Agriculture to Maritime Sectors

Beyond forest and land fire monitoring and post-disaster assessment, Earth Intelligence can be applied across agriculture, environmental and forestry management, mining, infrastructure, and maritime activities.

In agriculture, satellite data can be used to monitor land and crop conditions, enabling agricultural areas to be observed through remote-sensing information.

In the environmental and forestry sectors, the technology can help track changes in land cover over time.

For mining and infrastructure, Earth Intelligence can be used to monitor changes in areas where industrial activities and infrastructure projects are located.

Similar technology can also be applied to the maritime sector to support the monitoring of activities across marine areas.

Through GeoTSat, Telkomsat is developing an approach that combines satellite observation and data analysis to make Earth intelligence more accessible for monitoring, assessment, and informed decision-making.
