Smart Shoes That Track Your Body in Real Time

1 week ago | Digital Health

Jakarta, INTI - BRIN is developing an innovative smart footwear technology designed to analyze walking patterns in an objective, measurable, and real-time manner. More than just a data collection tool, this smart footwear serves as an early detection system capable of identifying changes in body conditions before they become serious issues.

The technology can be applied across a wide range of use cases, from monitoring general health conditions and detecting potential injury risks to supporting rehabilitation processes and delivering more precise movement performance analysis. By capturing detailed biomechanical data, it enables a deeper understanding of how the body moves in everyday activities.

From Data Collection to Decision Making Insight

The smart shoes are equipped with pressure sensors embedded within the sole, allowing them to detect how force is distributed across the foot each time it makes contact with the ground during different phases of walking. These sensors continuously collect data, which is then transmitted wirelessly to a control system for processing. Each phase of movement produces distinct pressure characteristics, enabling systematic and detailed analysis of gait patterns.

Beyond data collection, the footwear is integrated with communication systems and cloud-based platforms through an Application Programming Interface (API). This integration allows measurement results to be visualized in real time, stored for long-term monitoring, and analyzed in a structured and comprehensive manner. As a result, the data generated is not only informative in the moment but also valuable as a foundation for decision-making, whether in healthcare, sports performance, or rehabilitation planning.

This research is the result of a collaboration between BRIN and academic partners. BRIN researchers focus on developing gait analysis models and data-driven support systems, while university partners contribute to the design and prototyping of the smart footwear. Together, they aim to create a practical and scalable solution that bridges technology, health, and human movement analysis.

Conclusion

BRIN’s smart footwear innovation demonstrates how wearable technology can go beyond basic monitoring to deliver meaningful, data-driven insights. By combining real-time analysis, cloud integration, and collaborative research, this technology has the potential to transform how health conditions are detected, managed, and improved supporting a more proactive and precise approach to human well-being.
