Rachmat Pambudy Encourages Police to Leverage AI for Crime Investigation and Enhanced Public Services

4 hours ago | Artificial Intelligence

Jakarta, INTI - Minister of National Development Planning and Head of Bappenas, Rachmat Pambudy, has encouraged the Indonesian National Police (Polri) to adopt artificial intelligence (AI) technology to enhance data collection, processing, and analysis capabilities in solving various criminal cases.

Rachmat made the statement after speaking at a seminar held by the Polri Education and Training School in West Bandung, West Java, on Friday, June 19, 2026.

He emphasized that AI could assist law enforcement officers in solving crimes that occurred many years ago by strengthening data capabilities, expanding data collection, and enabling more accurate AI-driven analysis.

Rachmat pointed to several countries that have successfully solved criminal cases dating back more than two decades by utilizing extensive data and AI technology.

AI Supports Criminal Investigations and Police Human Resource Development

According to Rachmat, the application of AI extends beyond investigation and criminal case handling.

He explained that AI can also be utilized to support Polri’s educational institutions, research activities, and the improvement of police human resources and capabilities.

“Polri needs to become a pioneer in the responsible use of AI,” Rachmat said.

He stressed that police officers must also understand the risks associated with the misuse of AI technology.

According to him, AI can be used for both beneficial and harmful purposes. Therefore, Polri must understand the proper use of AI, identify AI-driven illegal activities, and anticipate potential misuse of digital technologies.

Rachmat believes that Polri should remain at the forefront of understanding digital technological advancements to effectively address emerging technology-based crimes.

“The police must become pioneers in AI development in Indonesia and lead the positive utilization of AI technology,” he said.

Understanding the Digital Space Becomes Increasingly Important

Beyond supporting law enforcement, Rachmat noted that AI and the internet could strengthen the relationship between the police and the public.

Based on available data, more than 230 million people in Indonesia have access to the internet.

He explained that social activities and interactions increasingly take place in digital spaces, making the understanding of online public behavior increasingly important for law enforcement institutions.

According to Rachmat, police officers need to understand conditions within local communities, public behavior in the digital world, and social dynamics at the grassroots level.

A deeper understanding of society, he said, would enable Polri to deliver more effective public services, maintain public safety and order, and strengthen trust and relationships with citizens.

“The better the police understand the communities they serve, the stronger the relationship between the police and society will become,” Rachmat added.

Conclusion

The adoption of AI in Polri is seen as a strategic step to strengthen crime investigation capabilities, enhance public services, and improve institutional capacity. Beyond law enforcement, AI is also expected to deepen digital understanding and strengthen trust between the police and society.
