PT KAI: B50 Reduces Emissions by Up to 9,000 Tons of CO2e in Train Operations

5 hours ago | Green Industrial

Jakarta, INTI - PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) projects that using B50 biodiesel in train operations can reduce emissions by up to 9,000 tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (CO2e). The implementation of this biodiesel blend has been fully in effect since July 1, 2026, as part of efforts to enhance energy efficiency and sustainability in rail-based transportation.

KAI management announced these energy efficiency achievements on Wednesday, August 26, 2026. KAI Vice President of Corporate Communication, Anne Purba, stated that total fuel consumption for train operations from January 1 to August 24, 2026, reached 172,228,585 liters.

"Future transportation requires increasingly efficient and measurable energy management. Through the implementation of B50, KAI continues to optimize energy use with higher biodiesel content to support increasingly sustainable train operations," said Anne.

From July 1 to August 24, 2026, operational fuel requirements were estimated at approximately 40 million liters. With the 10% increase in biodiesel composition, the use of B50 is projected to increase biodiesel utilization by approximately 4 million liters.

Reduction of 0.3 Kilograms of CO2e per Passenger

The estimated emission reduction was calculated using the emission reduction benefit approach established by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM). The calculation focused on long-distance and local train operations.

From January to July 2026, long-distance and local train services transported approximately 29.86 million passengers. Based on these calculations, the emission reduction benefit from implementing B50 is equivalent to approximately 0.3 kilograms of CO2e per passenger.

KAI Executive Vice President and Corporate Secretary, Wisnu Pramudya, stated that in addition to implementing B50, the company continues to improve efficiency by optimizing the use of rolling stock and managing energy consumption based on measurable data.

“Trains are a mode of mass transportation capable of serving large numbers of people in a single trip. Therefore, improving energy efficiency in railway operations contributes to the development of transportation that is increasingly effective and sustainable,” said Wisnu.

The implementation of B50 represents one of KAI’s measures to support the national energy transformation agenda. This policy also reinforces the development of rail-based transportation that is more efficient, modern, and sustainability-oriented.

Conclusion

PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) projects that the implementation of B50 biodiesel in train operations could reduce emissions by up to 9,000 tons of CO2e. Emission reduction benefits were calculated focusing on long-distance and local train services, which served 29.86 million passengers from January to July 2026. These emission reduction benefits equate to approximately 0.3 kilograms of CO2e per passenger.
