Jakarta, INTI - PLN Batam in the Riau Islands is ensuring the readiness and reliability of its electricity system to support the continued growth of the data center industry and digital economy in the city.
“PLN Batam is committed to supporting the growth of the digital economy and data center industry by ensuring a reliable, competitive, and sustainable electricity supply,” PLN Batam President Director Kwin Fo said in an official statement received in Batam on Friday.
The company is continuing to prepare Batam’s electricity system for future demand, including by gradually expanding generation capacity in line with increasing electricity consumption.
Kwin Fo made the statement during Data Centre World Asia, part of Tech Week Singapore 2026 in Singapore.
According to Kwin Fo, the development of the data center industry has placed Batam increasingly on the global investment radar. Its geographic proximity to Singapore, infrastructure support, and growing investment ecosystem are among the factors enhancing Batam’s attractiveness to digital and data center industries.
“When discussing data center development in Indonesia, Batam is increasingly recognized by global investors. Its proximity to Singapore and its position within a free trade zone provide significant added value, particularly for investors in technology and AI,” he said.
Kwin Fo also highlighted the important role of the Batam Free Trade Zone and Free Port Authority (BP Batam) in creating an investment ecosystem that supports the accelerated development of industry in Batam.
He said streamlined and efficient licensing processes could further strengthen Batam’s competitiveness in attracting global investment.
“Batam has an advantage as a free trade zone. BP Batam’s support in facilitating and accelerating investment processes is an important factor in making Batam increasingly attractive to technology and data center investors,” Kwin Fo added.
PLN Batam Expands Focus on Renewable Energy
Beyond ensuring a reliable electricity supply, PLN Batam is also strengthening its commitment to providing greener energy.
Kwin Fo said the development and utilization of renewable energy would continue to be expanded gradually.
“Data center growth requires not only large amounts of electricity, but also increasingly greener power. Therefore, PLN Batam is preparing both simultaneously: maintaining electricity system reliability to support industrial growth while increasing renewable energy utilization to advance sustainability,” Kwin Fo said.
PLN Batam’s participation in Data Centre World Asia is part of the company’s efforts to strengthen relationships with the global business and technology community while highlighting Batam’s potential as an emerging hub for digital economy and data center growth in the Asian region.
Conclusion
PLN Batam is strengthening electricity system reliability while gradually expanding renewable energy utilization to support the growing data center industry. With its proximity to Singapore, free trade zone status, and developing investment ecosystem, Batam is positioning itself as an increasingly important location for digital infrastructure and data center development in the region.
