Jakarta, INTI - In an era of rapid technological advancement, strict and precise regulations are crucial to ensuring  the negative impacts of technology, including artificial intelligence (AI), can be minimized.

Clear and well-structured regulationing frameworks not only serve as a preventive measure against technology misuse but also provide legal protection for individuals and entities affected by its deployment.

Currently, Indonesia is undergoing a transition toward digital transformation, where AI utilization has become a key aspect of development.

To ensure that AI implementation proceeds ethically, responsibly, and in line with national interests, the government has been preparing various supporting infrastructures, including comprehensive regulations.

As reported by Antara on Friday, January 31, 2025, Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital (Wamenkomdigi), Nezar Patria, emphasized that cross-sector collaboration is essential in drafting effective AI regulations.

He highlighted the importance of involving various stakeholders, including industries, academics, non-governmental organizations (NGOs), and the general public, in formulating policies that not only maximize the benefits of AI but also mitigate potential risks arising from its use.

"Proactive involvement of all stakeholders in AI regulation and development is crucial so that opportunities to be part of the global AI ecosystem and the meaningful utilization of AI technology within the country can be achieved," said Nezar during the "AI Policy Dialogue" event held in Jakarta on Thursday.

With a collaborative approach and well-established regulations, Indonesia is expected to develop a highly competitive and innovative AI ecosystem while prioritizing security and societal benefits.

What Needs to be Done?

As an initial step in drafting comprehensive regulations, the Ministry of Communication and Digital (Komdigi) has initiated the AI Policy Dialogue, a discussion forum designed to explore the potential and challenges of artificial intelligence across various sectors.

This program will be held in seven discussion sessions, covering various industry aspects, from e-commerce, banking and finance, healthcare, education, creative economy, sustainability, to cross-cutting issues.

The inagural session of this series will focus on the e-commerce sector, which has become the backbone of Indonesia's digital economy.

With the rapid growth of this industry, AI's role is considered crucial to improving operational efficiency, personalizing services, and driving broader digital economic growth.

According to Nezar Patria, the e-commerce sector has great potential for utilizing AI, especially with the projected market expected to reach 150 billion USD by 2030.

“With the projected e-commerce market in Indonesia expected to reach 150 billion USD by 2030, we must ensure that AI adoption in this sector truly provides maximum benefits for consumers, business actors, and the wider community,” he said.

The government emphasizes that AI development must be approached collaboratively, where the regulations designed not only support innovation and economic growth but also protect the public interest to ensure no parties are harmed in the implementation of this technology.

Conclusion

Through the AI Policy Dialogue, the Indonesian government has demonstrated its commitment to building an innovative, inclusive, and responsible AI ecosystem.

The regulations being developed aim not only to accelerate the adoption of AI across various strategic sectors but also to ensure that the technology is utilized ethically and in line with national interests.

By fostering collaboration among the government, industry, academia, and the public, Indonesia is poised to become a key player in the global AI landscape. At the same time, the country is taking proactive steps to protect its citizens from the potential risks associated with technological advancements, ensuring that the benefits of AI are shared equitably across society.
