Jakarta, INTI — In increasingly complex space exploration missions, NASA is collaborating with Google to develop an artificial intelligence (AI)-based medical assistant to support astronauts’ health while far from Earth. This innovation aims to help astronauts diagnose and manage medical symptoms independently, especially when no doctors are available or communication with Earth is disrupted.

NASA and Google Collaborate to Create a Digital Medical Assistant

Known as the Crew Medical Officer Digital Assistant (CMO-DA), this tool is a multimodal assistant combining voice, text, and image capabilities. The system operates within Google Cloud’s Vertex AI environment, utilizing Google’s advanced infrastructure for AI model development and training.

Trials Involve Diverse Medical Scenarios

The CMO-DA experiment tests three main medical scenarios: ankle injury, pelvic pain, and ear pain. This AI assistant is evaluated by three doctors, including one astronaut, through medical history assessment, clinical reasoning, and treatment recommendation processes.

Diagnostic Results Show High Accuracy

Evaluations reveal promising diagnostic accuracy, with 74% for pelvic pain, 80% for ear pain, and 88% for ankle injury. This demonstrates the AI assistant’s potential to aid autonomous medical care in space.

Further Development to Adapt to Space Conditions

NASA plans to add data from medical devices and train the AI to understand special conditions in space, such as microgravity effects. This is crucial for the assistant to provide diagnoses and recommendations suited to the extreme space environment.

Potential Benefits for Earth’s Healthcare

Although currently focused on space use, this development has the potential to be applied in Earth’s healthcare. The AI technology developed could enhance medical service quality and access in remote or emergency situations.
