Microsoft Delivers Indonesia's First Cloud Infrastructure to Support AI Economy

10 months ago | Data Center and Cloud Computing

Jakarta, INTI – Indonesia is increasingly emphasizing its position as a major player in the global digital ecosystem. This is marked by the inauguration of the Indonesia Center Cloud Region by Microsoft, which is one of the strategic steps in strengthening the national cloud computing infrastructure. Minister of Communications and Digital, Meutya Hafid, said the inauguration is not only a form of Indonesia's readiness to manage advanced technology, but also a strong signal that Indonesia is ready to become a global investment center in the cloud computing sector.

“This is a new chapter in Indonesia's journey towards digital independence and the center of technological growth in the Asia Pacific region,” Meutya said at the Microsoft AI Tour event in Jakarta, Tuesday, May 27, 2025.

Big Investment, Real Impact

The cloud region project is part of Microsoft's US$1.7 billion investment commitment to Indonesia over the period 2024-2028. The funds are focused on developing cloud infrastructure and artificial intelligence (AI), which are believed to accelerate digital transformation in various sectors.

According to Meutya, the presence of this data center is also a promotion for Indonesia as a world-class technology investment destination. “Indonesia will ensure that investments that come not only survive, but also grow together with national needs,” she said.

Economic and Employment Potential

Indonesia's digital economy growth also shows a positive trend. Meutya cited data showing that Indonesia's digital economy gross value (GMV) increased from US$ 80 billion in 2023 to US$ 90 billion in 2024, and is projected to reach US$ 130 billion in 2025.

Meanwhile, the value of Indonesia's data center market is expected to grow from US$2.3 billion to US$3.79 billion by 2030. This growth is not only driven by global demand, but also by the growing need for domestic digital services. This investment from Microsoft is also expected to contribute US$ 2.5 billion or around Rp 41 trillion to the national economy, as well as create around 60 thousand new jobs.

Support from Microsoft: Infrastructure and Digital Transformation Acceleration

Scott Guthrie, Executive Vice President of Cloud + AI Group at Microsoft, said that the cloud region is an important foundation for accelerating Indonesia's digital transformation. “We are bringing the full power of Azure Cloud infrastructure to Indonesia, which will support AI development and national digitization,” he said.

With a large population and massive internet usage, Indonesia has great potential as a digital economic center. Through concrete steps such as the construction of this cloud region, Indonesia is believed to be able to strengthen its strategic position in the global arena.

Conclusion

The inauguration of the Indonesia Cloud Region by Microsoft is an important point in Indonesia's digital transformation journey. In addition to strengthening technology infrastructure, this step shows Indonesia's seriousness in welcoming foreign investment and encouraging digital economic growth. With the support of policies, technology, and human resources, Indonesia is ready to become the center of cloud and AI innovation in the Asia Pacific.
