Komdigi Prepares University Students for the Workforce Through AI Talent Factory

12 hours ago | Startups & Digital Talent

Jakarta, INTI - Indonesia’s Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) is encouraging university students to strengthen their competitiveness and prepare for the evolving job market through the Artificial Intelligence Talent Factory (AITF) program, which equips participants with skills to develop and apply artificial intelligence (AI).

The initiative was highlighted by Gunawan Hutagalung, Head of the Digital Talent Development Center at Komdigi’s Human Resources Development and Research Agency (BPSDM), during the Workshop 1 Artificial Intelligence Talent Factory at the Faculty of Computer Science, Universitas Brawijaya, in Malang, East Java.

Gunawan said academic transcripts and professional certifications alone are no longer sufficient for university graduates seeking to enter today’s workforce.

Students also need practical knowledge and the ability to develop AI-based projects so they can adapt to rapidly changing workforce demands.

“Some jobs require cognitive skills and physical effort, both of which can increasingly be replaced by AI. The challenge today is to prepare students with the ability to adopt and work with AI,” Gunawan said.

Students Encouraged to Develop AI Innovation

The ability to adopt and utilize AI is becoming an increasingly important skill for students as technology continues to evolve and transform the workplace.

Through AITF, participants are encouraged to develop innovative technology solutions powered by AI. These innovations are also expected to support the implementation and advancement of various government programs.

The program is designed to better prepare students for careers involving strategic planning and policymaking, analytical thinking, and research.

“When they eventually enter fields involving strategy, policymaking, analytical work, and research, they will already be prepared,” Gunawan said.

AI System Developed to Monitor Students at Sekolah Rakyat

Ir. Tri Astoto Kurniawan, S.T., M.T., Ph.D., IPM., Dean of the Faculty of Computer Science at Universitas Brawijaya, said the current AITF program is the second batch and continues a similar initiative conducted in 2026.

As part of the program, the Universitas Brawijaya team was assigned a case study focused on developing an AI-powered monitoring system for elementary and junior high school students at Sekolah Rakyat.

The case study addresses the need to monitor students’ activities within the Sekolah Rakyat environment.

“The Ministry of Social Affairs previously explained the need for supervision, and we hope this use case can help support that monitoring,” Tri Astoto said.

The AI-based system is being designed to assist dormitory supervisors in monitoring students’ daily activities using surveillance cameras or CCTV installed in Sekolah Rakyat facilities.

If students are detected engaging in activities that do not comply with established guidelines, the system is expected to identify the activity and provide an alert to the dormitory supervisor.

Students’ Psychological Well-Being Considered

The development of the AI-powered monitoring system also takes into account the psychological well-being of the students being monitored.

This consideration is particularly important because the system will be used for students at the elementary and junior high school levels.

“We discussed with the Head of the Digital Talent Development Center that psychological aspects need to be taken into consideration because these students are still in elementary and junior high school,” Tri Astoto said.

Conclusion

Through the Artificial Intelligence Talent Factory, Komdigi is strengthening students’ readiness for a rapidly changing digital workforce by equipping them with practical AI skills and encouraging innovation. Beyond developing technical capabilities, the program also demonstrates how AI can be applied to address real-world challenges, including education and student monitoring, while ensuring that technological development remains attentive to human and psychological considerations.
