Komdigi Implements IoT to Boost Tilapia Production in Sukabumi Through Fisheries Digitalization

6 months ago | Digital Technology

Jakarta, INTI – The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) continues to expand the application of technology in the real sector by introducing Internet of Things (IoT) innovation for tilapia fish farming in Sukabumi, West Java. Through the Digital Fisheries Technology Harvest Festival held on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, Komdigi showcased a tangible solution to address challenges in productivity and energy efficiency faced by local fish farmers. This initiative represents a concrete step by the government to bring digital transformation down to the village level, tackling long-standing issues such as crop failure, high operational costs, and the lack of real-time water quality monitoring. The program demonstrates that digitalization is not only for big cities but can also reach small ponds in rural areas.

Technological Solutions for Tilapia Farmers

Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid emphasized that the implementation of IoT in the fisheries sector is a clear example of digitalization reaching end-users directly in the field.

“We want to ensure that digitalization in our country reaches the user level. This technology must not only exist in the air or on land, but it should also reach the water,” she stated.

Since May 2025, Komdigi through the Directorate General of Digital Ecosystem has conducted training sessions for tilapia farmers in Cimahi Village, Cicantayan District, Sukabumi Regency, on how to utilize IoT-based microbubble aerator devices developed by local startup Banoo.

IoT for Energy Efficiency and Food Security

The program distributed 60 units of microbubble aerator devices to tilapia farmers across eight districts in Sukabumi. These devices can transmit sensor data including oxygen levels, temperature, and water pH directly to users’ smartphones through a dedicated digital application. As a result, farmers no longer need to monitor their ponds around the clock. The technology not only reduces electricity consumption by up to 40%, but also increases the survival rate of tilapia from 80% to 90%.
Meutya noted that this initiative aligns with President Prabowo Subianto’s priority on strengthening national food security through the adoption of digital technology in rural sectors.

Tangible Results and Local Government Appreciation

According to Edwin Hidayat Abdullah, Director General of Digital Ecosystem at Komdigi, the adoption of this technology has shown remarkable results tilapia harvesting can now be done four times a year, up from three times previously.
Meanwhile, Sukabumi Regent Asep Japar praised Komdigi’s initiative for not only providing technological tools but also technical guidance for the community.

“The success of this program proves that when the government and the people work hand in hand, sustainable innovation can be achieved. We hope this initiative will expand to other districts,” he said.

Toward a Digital Ecosystem for the Food Sector

The collaborative program between Komdigi, the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries, and the startup Banoo stands as a concrete example of digital technology integration to improve local economies.
Minister Meutya Hafid expressed hope that this success will pave the way for similar applications in agriculture and horticulture sectors, supporting the vision of national food self-sufficiency.
With this innovative initiative, Komdigi reaffirms its commitment to delivering the inclusive benefits of digitalization across air, land, and water for the well-being of the Indonesian people.

Conclusion:
Komdigi’s utilization of IoT technology in Sukabumi marks a significant milestone in the digital transformation of Indonesia’s fisheries sector. Through inter-ministerial collaboration and homegrown innovation, digitalization has proven its direct impact on productivity, energy efficiency, and rural community welfare.
