1 year ago | Artificial Intelligence

Jakarta, INTI – The Ministry of Communication and Digital (Kemkomdigi) aims to complete the roadmap for the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) within the next three months. This initiative is part of the effort to establish a comprehensive AI governance framework in Indonesia.

Collaboration with Stakeholders

Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital, Nezar Patria, stated that the government has conducted discussion forums with various stakeholders to develop an inclusive AI roadmap. “Discussions have taken place in several forums, including collaborations with organizations and companies that support this initiative,” he said at the discussion forum titled The Future of AI Governance in Indonesia: Lessons from Global Practices held in Central Jakarta on March 19, 2025.

Nezar added that the government is also studying AI-related regulations from other countries as references for drafting the roadmap. He acknowledged the importance of studies conducted by research institutions, as they provide valuable input for ensuring that the resulting policies are inclusive and promote AI industry growth within the country.

Flexible Regulations to Foster AI Innovation

The government emphasizes that the regulations being developed will be flexible and incentive-based, aiming to support innovation without imposing excessive compliance burdens on the industry. “We do not want to hinder innovation because AI is highly dynamic,” Nezar explained.

In developing this roadmap, the government focuses on two key aspects: AI infrastructure development and digital talent cultivation in the AI sector. “We are still in the early stages, where these two elements must be fulfilled before we can take further leaps forward,” he added.

The AI Roadmap as a National Development Guide

Director of Artificial Intelligence and New Technology Ecosystem at the Directorate General of Digital Ecosystem, Kemkomdigi, Aju Widya Sari, stated that the AI roadmap must be completed swiftly due to the rapid advancement of AI technology. “We have roughly three years to determine strategic steps before AI evolves further. Therefore, this roadmap must be completed in a short period,” she said.

Aju also emphasized that the roadmap will serve as a foundation for ministries and agencies to design policies for AI development and adoption in their respective sectors. With the AI roadmap in place, Indonesia’s AI governance is expected to become more structured, supporting sustainable growth in the digital ecosystem.

Conclusion

The development of the AI roadmap by Kemkomdigi is a strategic step to ensure inclusive AI governance and foster innovation in Indonesia. By adopting flexible regulations and focusing on infrastructure and digital talent development, the government aims to accelerate AI adoption effectively. The successful formulation of this roadmap will be a crucial foundation for the sustainable growth of the national AI ecosystem.
