8 hours ago | Industrial Transformation

Jakarta, INTI - Scientific and technical cooperation in high-energy physics between Indonesia and the European Organization for Nuclear Research has officially entered a new phase following the signing of an International Cooperation Agreement (ICA) in Geneva on April 21.

The five-year agreement opens significant opportunities for Indonesia, including joint research initiatives, scientist exchange programs, student and postdoctoral training, as well as access to CERN’s world-class research facilities. The collaboration is expected to strengthen the foundation for advancements in medical nuclear technology, detector systems, high-performance computing, and STEM-based human capital development.

Strengthening Indonesia’s Global Science Diplomacy

The agreement was signed by CERN Director-General Mark Thomson on April 21 and will subsequently be signed circularly by National Research and Innovation Agency Head Arif Satria. Witnessed by R. Nunung Nuryantono, the ICA further strengthens the partnership that has been established since 2013 through collaboration in the ALICE experiment.

Following the signing, the Indonesian government will continue negotiations on derivative protocols of the ICA to ensure national interests are fully accommodated, including scholarship opportunities, researcher exchange programs, and strategic access to CERN facilities. The Indonesia–CERN ICA marks an important milestone in strengthening Indonesia’s science diplomacy on the global stage.

Conclusion

The Indonesia–CERN partnership reflects the country’s growing commitment to advancing science, technology, and innovation through international collaboration. By gaining access to world-class research networks and facilities, Indonesia is expected to accelerate the development of scientific talent, strengthen technological capabilities, and enhance its position in the global research ecosystem.
